Vita Coco Coconut Milk Drink Review

Vita Coco, makers of the popular Vita Coco range of coconut waters, have created their own brand of coconut milk. Described as delicious, smooth & dairy free it can be found in the chilled milk section of larger supermarkets.

Vita Coco’s coconut milk drink has added calcium plus other vitamins and minerals and has just 30 calories per 100ml.

Vita Coco is one of the most widely sold brands of coconut water in the UK, although there are many many more – see my coconut water guide to calories and nutrition.

I was instantly attracted to this new bottle, which stood out amongst the other alternative dairy milks. It wasn’t just the little tag around its neck offering a £1 off the next bottle that was appealing. I was drawn to the traditional bottle shape and the overall refreshing and tropical look. Yes, I’m a sucker for clever branding.

Since I like coconut milk, I decided to try this one out.

It has to be stored in the fridge and once opened, should be used within 1 week. You need to give it a good shake before pouring as the coconut sediment sinks to the bottom of the bottle after a little while.

Opening the lid reveals a lovely pure white frothy (because I’d just shaken it) coconut milk which smelled divine.

Drinking some ice cold direct from the fridge is a taste sensation. With little bits of coconut floating around, this is exceptionally creamy, with a strong coconut taste. It's almost like the coconut milk I use for cooking from a tin (the low fat version)!

While Vita Coco's Coconut Milk is delicious on its own, it's also fantastic in smoothies and used as a base for ice lollies. I've also added it to a curry and a soup to provide extra creaminess.

Unlike some other coconut milk alternatives, Vita Coco’s main ingredient is coconut water rather than plain water and it contains 10% coconut cream, which helps strengthen its overall flavour.

This is definitely my favourite coconut milk so far.

It is gluten free, dairy free and soy free with no preservatives or colours. Contains naturally occurring sugars.

As a side note, this coconut milk does contain stabilisers which, in large volumes, may cause intestinal problems such as bloating for some people. See e Number guide.
