Koko Dairy Free Flavoured Coconut Milk Review

Koko Dairy free coconut milk is my favourite out of the many coconut milk drink brands out there. I like it because it has a mild, fresh coconut taste and is low in calories. Koko also make a dairy free Coconut Strawberry flavoured drink and dairy free Coconut Chocolate flavoured milk.

I was recently sent some samples of each flavour as well as the original Koko Dairy Free milk (see review) and a newer Koko Dairy Free Light – low fat version (another review). The coconut milks are available in packs of three 250ml cartons (not the light version) or large 1 litre long life cartons. Here’s what I thought.

I don’t generally buy flavoured milk drinks because of their sugar content, instead preferring to add my own fruit to make smoothies. Koko flavoured coconut milks also have added sugar which unfortunately doubles the calorie count. However, the sugar level isn't high, it's in the medium range

I tried the strawberry flavoured coconut milk first. It has a sweet but faint hint of strawberry that wasn't quite strong enough for my tastes. It does remind me of other strawberry milk drinks (dairy) that I've tried in the past, so passes off for a dairy drink. The liquid itself is quite thin but has a silky texture. I’d never have known this wasn’t dairy milk. It definitely tastes better icy cold than room temperature as I originally tried.

Next was the chocolate which I tried out cold and heated up. It does suggest on the pack that it tastes great hot or cold. It doesn’t say this on the strawberry flavour. I guess a Hot Strawberry doesn’t have the same ring to it as a Hot Chocolate!

So the chocolate flavour is OK. Again, it is quite a thin liquid, a bit like watered down milk. The chocolate flavour is good and it’s not overly sweet. I also heated it up and found it a bit bland for my liking.

My two daughters gave both flavours a try. The youngest didn’t like the strawberry, but she doesn’t like strawberry flavour anyway. She did like the chocolate but said it tasted like dark chocolate. My older daughter agreed with me that it was quite thin, but thought it was just like regular dairy milk.

Both flavours are fortified with Vitamin D2 and B12 as well as calcium.

Here's a comparison of the calories and sugar content of some of the chocolate dairy milks and dairy free chocolate milks being sold in the supermarkets:
