Alpro Coconut Milk Review

I've recently got into the habit of making porridge using half water and half coconut milk. Besides giving the porridge a lovely flavour, it makes the porridge especially creamy, something which water alone doesn't do.

My coconut milk of choice is generally Koko Dairy free coconut milk. However, as I regularly use Alpro’s Soya Light, I decided to try out the new Alpro Coconut Milk which has 20 calories per 100ml.

Alpro’s Coconut Milk is available in 1 litre cartons, either fresh or long life. Both have the same nutritional values. I bought the fresh version.

The milk is a beautiful pure white and gives off a tempting aroma of coconuts on opening. Drinking some on its own, it has a strong coconut taste in a way that coconut water doesn’t have. This is because the milk is made from coconut flesh rather than the liquid from inside the coconut.

However, the actual amount of coconut is very small compared with the coconut milk you find in tins and use for cooking that gorgeous Thai curry! And so coconut milk for drinking is also much lower in calories. Alpro’s coconut milk has only 20 calories per 100ml.

I tried the milk when making porridge and unfortunately didn’t like it, simply because the coconut taste was too strong. But it works really well in things you want to have a coconut flavour. For example, I make my own chia desserts using chia seeds, coconut milk and a fruit puree of some kind – mango for example. The coconut flavour then works really well if you're after a tropical taste.

What I don’t like quite so much with this milk is the texture. It is just a little bit too thick for what a milk should be. It’s hard to explain, but it’s sort of mildly gloopy. And looking at the ingredients I see it must be due to the added Xanthan gum and guar gum which are thickeners. I’m not sure why this is needed, but it did put me off.  It also has rice as an ingredient, but quite why it's there is anybody's guess, especially since Alpro already produce a  rice milk.

Found in most major supermarkets.

  2. Oh no sorry it wasn't slow, I just clicked the bookmark then immediately looked it up

Also, on a side note, Provamel have released these unsweetened soya, almond and coconut yoghurts in Holland and Barrett - well worth a try if you can find them. I've still got my eyes peeled for the coconut variety, but I can definitely recommend the others
