Kruger Hot Chocolate Light (ASDA) – 41 calories

I generally get through one or two cups of low calorie hot chocolate each day. And although I’ve got my two firm favourites, I can’t resist the temptation of trying out brands I haven't yet tasted.

And so it was while shopping at ASDA that I thought it about time I tried this Kruger Hot Chocolate Light. With just 41 calories per drink, it’s certainly a good one to fit into a lower calorie diet.

Kruger is a German brand which I’ve only seen available in ASDA stores. The packaging is also half printed in German. Each box of hot chocolate contains eight sachets of chocolate powder.

The drink is described as an instant hot chocolate drink with sugars and sweeteners. The sweeteners in question include aspartame, acesulfame-k and glucose syrup.

To make up the drink you just empty the contents of one sachet (10g) into a cup, pour on hot, but not boiling water (200ml), stir well, and it’s ready to drink.

I like my hot chocolate quite milky, so was pleased to see the powder looked reasonably light, probably because it had milk powder in the ingredients. After pouring out the recommended amount of water, the chocolate did look thin and watery.

After tasting it, well, yes has a very thin consistency. It’s certainly sweet enough not to have to add any more sweetener (unusual for me). But I had to pour in some extra milk, in this case unsweetened almond milk, to give it a bit more creaminess. It’s not a particularly strong chocolatey taste, so anyone used to drinking regular hot chocolate probably wouldn’t go for this.

All in all, it was quite similar to the Weight Watchers hot chocolate drinks sold in cups. It's OK as a drink if you’re looking for something to fill the gap, but as an enjoyable drink, it’s not one I’d recommend.

There’s no mention on the pack whether it's suitable for vegetarians.

Found in branches of ASDA.
