Tesco Stevia Sweet Low Calorie Sweeteners

Last year saw the arrival of a new type of low calorie, natural sweetener made from Stevia. The first to make their appearance were Truvia and Pure Via. These are available in sprinkle and cube form.

At the time I reviewed these there were no stevia sweeteners in tablet form. Fortunately, since then, some of the other popular sweetener names such as Canderel and Hermesetas began producing their versions of stevia tablet sweeteners. Tesco has also followed suit by selling their own brand of sweetener called Stevia Sweet.

Stevia Sweet is made from the leaves of the Stevia plant. It’s a totally natural sweetener and is suitable for vegetarians.

Last year Stevia Sweet was available in sprinkle form, but now seems to have disappeared. However, Tesco have just introduced new Stevia Sweet tablets which are available in a handy dispenser holding 100 sweeteners. They're best used for sweetening hot drinks such as tea, coffee and hot chocolate. Each tablet can be used as a natural sweetening substitute for sugar.

As someone who uses sweeteners in every hot drink, I feel far happier using a natural, calorie free sweetener like stevia. Although the artificial sweeteners on sale are supposedly ‘safe’, there’s always that tiny doubt in the back of my mind that maybe there was a grain of truth in those scare stories from earlier years.

Still, I’m not about to start using sugar and it seems that Stevia is the all natural way to go.

The Stevia Sweet tablets take about 20 seconds to dissolve in a hot drink which is pretty normal. As for the taste, they are definitely less sweet than my usual sucralose based sweetener tabs and I find I need to use an extra tablet to get the same degree of sweetness.

At £1.59 for a pack of 100 Stevia Sweet tablets, they are nearly three times as expensive as Tesco’s Sucralose Tablet Sweeteners which are £1.99 for a pack of 300 or Tesco’s aspartame-based sweetener tablets costing £1.72 for 300 tablet pack (at the time of writing.) However, I do like the idea of stevia as a natural sweetener, so will continue to buy these.
