Alpro Soya Light Vanilla and Chocolate Drinks - NEW

Although I'm not a vegetarian, I've switched from drinking dairy milk to soya. And, having tried as many brands as I can find, my absolute favourite is Alpro's Soya Light (ambient) variety. This is slightly sweet but still has only 31 calories per 100ml. Alpro also have an ambient Vanilla flavour, which I’ve often wanted to try but the calories were too high.

So this week I was excited to see Alpro have produced a new lower calorie, Light Vanilla flavour soya milk as well as a new Light Chocolate flavour.

I bought the Light Vanilla flavour which is suitable for vegetarians and vegans. It’s produced in a nut free environment and is free from dairy, lactose, wheat and gluten.

The calorie comparisons between the Light and Original varieties are as follows:

Alpro Vanilla flavour soya drink (ambient): 62 calories per 100ml
NEW Alpro Light Vanilla flavour soya drink (ambient): 38 calories per 100ml
Alpro Chilled Chocolate flavour soya drink (chilled): 77 calories per 100ml
NEW Alpro Light Chocolate flavour soya milk (ambient): 47 calories per 100ml

I was looking forward to trying this out. It was worth it. This vanilla soya drink is gorgeous and totally lived up to any expectations I had. It has a delicate vanilla flavour and is quite sweet. Perhaps a little too sweet. It resembles the flavour of Alpro’s Vanilla Soya Dessert (see post). This drink is so tasty and delicious as a drink on its own.

It makes a great vanilla latte (I mix it with unsweetened soya) to keep the calories down. It also adds extra flavour when mixed in with low calorie hot chocolate drinks.

Looking at the sweetening ingredients, it’s interesting to see that Alpro have sweetened the Light Vanilla with sugar whereas the Alpro Light Soya Milk uses Fructose-Glucose Syrup. I know there’s been a lot of controversy about this sweetener and I’m not overly happy about it. But as long as the calories are low, I don’t mind so much.

The Chocolate Light also uses sugar as does the regular chilled.

You can find Alpro Light Vanilla and Light Chocolate in the long life milk section of supermarkets including Sainsbury and Tesco.

  2. Is this still available the vanilla light? I'm guessing not unfortunately although I see they have a regular vanilla.

    1. Hi Jas, unfortunately not. For some strange reason they stopped making it. Instead they've replaced the regular Alpro vanilla soya with a 30% less sugar version with 54 calories per 100ml. I haven't tried it though and don't plan to!

    2. It's a shame, I've tried the reduced sugar one but still found it too sweet. I didn't really get through much of it to be honest as I mainly use soya milk for breakfast and it was too vanilla-y and sweet for cereal IMO!
