Tesco Light Choices Salad Cream - 21 Calories

During the warmer summer months, eating a refreshing and healthy salad is far more appealing than during the depths of an icy winter. For those that like to spice up their salad and add a bit more flavour, salad cream can do the job very well.

But adding salad cream can also add lots of unwanted calories, making your salad not quite as healthy as it was. Choosing a reduced fat variety can add flavour with very few calories. Tesco Light Choices Salad Cream contains 50% less fat than their standard version, with just 21 calories per tablespoon and 1 ProPoint as calculated by Tesco.

Tesco Light Choices salad cream is low in saturates and features in tescodiets.com. It’s available in a 305g squeezy plastic bottle and a 440g top down bottle. Each tablespoon has 21 calories compared with 46 calories for Tesco’s standard salad cream.

Direct competition includes Weight Watchers Salad Cream which has 18 calories per tablespoon, Heinz Salad Cream Light with 22 calories per tablespoon and Sainsbury's Be Good to Yourself Salad Cream with 21 calories also.

I’ve been eating salad cream for years, yet it’s only recently I discovered salad cream is a uniquely British condiment. It’s similar to mayonnaise, but there is a distinct taste difference. Salad cream is slightly tangier while mayonnaise is milder.

Salad cream also has a yellowish tinge while mayonnaise is usually white. Both have eggs, vinegar, oil and mustard in the ingredients and both can be used in sandwiches and as a dressing.

I’ve always used salad cream in my salads, and mayonnaise as a sandwich spreader. I find the taste of mayonnaise is too bland for a salad and salad cream too strong for a sandwich. But that’s just my preference.

I like the taste of Tesco’s Light Choices salad cream and think they’ve done a good job retaining a lovely flavour while losing much of the fat content. Id happily buy this again.

Once it’s opened it has to be stored in the fridge and used within 6 weeks.

Available in Tesco stores and online.
