Quaker Oats 'Oat So Simple' Morning Bars - NEW

Sales of breakfast cereals are plummeting according to The Grocer (see article). At the same time, the range of cereal bars is expanding at an ever increasing rate.

If you’ve joined the cereal bar brigade you may be interested in a new offering from those well known oat people – Quaker Oats. Their new bars are called Oat So Simple Morning Bars. They’re available in three flavours: Golden Syrup, Fruit Muesli and Raspberry & Pomegranate.

Oat So Simple Morning Bars provide an even faster and more convenient way of eating your morning oats. As the article explains, it seems more people are choosing to eat breakfast at their desks and cereal bars seem to fit the bill.

Whether they are healthier than a regular bowl of cereal and milk really depends on the cereal. Of course, a bowl of porridge made with water or milk is a healthy and nutritious way to start the day. But are these oat morning bars from Quaker as healthy as a bowl of Oat So Simple?

Each box contains five individually wrapped 32g bars. One Golden Syrup bar has 142 calories with a medium fat content and just over one teaspoon of sugar. They're also a good source of fibre.
I tried out the golden syrup flavour which taste very much like a flapjack. They’re sort of soft and squishy with bits of crunchy crisp cereal. Just over half the ingredients are Quaker oats and you can clearly see these in the bar.

Unfortunately the second ingredient is glucose syrup and sugar and golden syrup also feature further down the list. The sugar level is high, with 15.4g of sugar per 100g.

I wouldn’t say they replace a bowl of porridge. They’re a lot quicker to eat for a start. They are yummy but I’d rather eat one as a snack.

Although these bars are called ‘Morning Bars’ it doesn’t specifically mention that they’re designed as a replacement for breakfast, like the Belvita range. More of a morning snack perhaps?

As it says on the box:
'Oats. We love them, and have done ever since Quaker was first trademarked back in 1877. We have been championing good breakfasts ever since. We're always looking for new, tasty and convenient ways for you to enjoy their wholegrain goodness.'
You can find this range of Oat So Simple Morning Bars in larger supermarkets.

Nutrition information per 35g Golden Syrup bar: 142 calories, 2.9g protein, 23.7g carbohydrates, 5.4g sugars, 3.5g fat, 1.1g sat fat, 2.4g fibre, 0.18g salt.

  1. I love these bars, the fruit muesli one is nice too. I think in comparison to most cereal bars they are lower in sugar (albeit still high!) but they lso take longer to eat and are higher in fibre which is a plus!

  2. Considering belvita has much more sugar, these are pretty good. I can't think of any bar that has lower sugar actually. Even my granola has way more sugar than the morning bars
