There aren’t that many to choose from when it comes to drinks. One way is to drink Kefir which is fermented from milk, and another is to drink kombucha which is fermented from tea.
Kombucha can be drunk as a super healthy alternative to fizzy soft drinks because it’s naturally low in calories, naturally fizzy and can help increase levels of good bacteria. I purchased a bottle of Kombucha made by Pro Fusion Organic Living which has just 18 calories per 100ml.
Some of the benefits of drinking and eating fermented food and drink includes fewer food cravings, weight loss, improved mood, clearing up skin problems, reduced inflammation, balancing hormones and increased immunity as well as reducing symptoms relating to IBS such as bloating, wind and stomach pains.
As a nutritional therapist I was very excited when I first discovered Kombucha. Although I don’t drink fizzy drinks, I loved the idea of a healthy and naturally low calorie drink that will actually provide some health benefits.
Unfortunately, the first time I tried some was at a health food convention held at Olympia in London. There were a few tiny cups with different flavoured kombucha to try, and I have to admit, I nearly gagged as soon as I caught a whiff of it. I tried drinking it and after one mouthful had to spit it out. I had absolutely no interest in trying any again!
But that was a couple of years ago.
More recently I was tempted into purchasing a bottle of Kombucha in my local health food store because the flavours sounded amazing. I bought the Maca, Coconut and Pineapple which sounded absolutely delicious, like a pina colada.
It has to be kept in the fridge and when I purchased my bottle, it had a couple of months of shelf life left. Once it’s opened it must be finished in 4 days.
It has a slight fizz and smells as sweet as it tastes. This kombucha was a totally different experience to my first. The flavour was fruity and just sweet enough for me and this was very drinkable. A great healthy alternative to regular soft drinks.
Other flavours by Pro Fusion include: Baobab, Mint Pomegranate; Turmeric, Ginger & Lemon.
