M&S Twice the Fibre Porridge Review

M&S Twice the fibre porridgePorridge is such a healthy food and it’s so versatile. Whether you like it made the traditional way or as a trendy Bircher muesli, the health benefits of porridge oats are the same. One of these benefits is its fibre content.

Porridge oats contain soluble fibre and insoluble fibre, both of which are beneficial to gut health. Regular porridge oats contain around 7-9g of fibre per 100g which is good. But you can do a lot better with a new porridge in Marks & Spencer called ‘Twice the Fibre Porridge’.

I love porridge oats and in contrast to the latest tends which seem to be devoted to smothering oats with nut butter, nuts and berries, I have gone right back to basics making mine with just water and a tiny bit of sea salt.

After always making my porridge with milk, I decided one day to see what it would taste like minus the milk calories and made the Scottish way with salt. I loved it and always make it this way now using jumbo oats.

As I bulk buy oats quite cheaply, I wasn’t planning on buying any while on a shopping trip in an M&S food store recently. However, the ‘Twice the Fibre’ label caught my attention so I had to check out the nutrition label and ingredients.

The extra fibre comes from oat bran and chicory fibre (which contains inulin – a source of soluble fibre). Oat bran is another soluble fibre. The fibre content is indeed twice, if not more than twice regular oats. M&S Twice the Fibre Porridge oats have 19.5g of fibre per 100g, or, if you’re serving up the recommended 40g, that’s 7.8g in one meal.

According to The British Nutrition Foundation, those aged 17 and over should aim to include at least 30g of fibre each day, so one bowl of the M&S High fibre oats provide around one quarter of this fibre.

One 40g bowl made with water contains 154 calories.

So what are they like?

I made these oats with just filtered water and a teeny sprinkle of sea salt, cooking it in a saucepan on the stove. As the oats aren’t jumbo, it thickened up very quickly and I needed to add a bit more water than usual. This meant even more porridge to eat, so it was more filling. Win!

These oats made a very creamy bowl of porridge which is also quite chewy. It tasted like regular porridge and I added a little soya milk and stevia to sweeten. I’ll definitely buy this again.
