According to research recently published in the New England Journal of Medicine, we start gaining weight in the run up to Christmas and New Year, with more gained at Easter.
It’s hardly surprising really. These are all big celebratory holidays and inevitably celebrations go hand in hand with food. Lots of it.
While the results were mainly based on American participants, the researchers also monitored the weight fluctuations of Japanese and German residents. It was a similar pattern for all with the trend for weight gain following a similar pattern around each country's main holiday periods.
The research was undertaken by Cornell Food and Brand Lab Director Brian Wansink and colleagues from Tampere University of Technology of Finland. They analysed the results of nearly 3,000 people where their weight was monitored via wireless weigh in technology.
If you’re one of those who steadily gain weight over the holiday periods, it might be helpful to keep track of your weight from now onwards. Every week you gain some, try losing it again the following week. This way you won’t have to face the dreaded New Year resolution to lose weight, or face the bikini diet before summer comes around again!
