This new Special K claims it has ‘even more nutrition in every delicious flake’ and is calling itself ‘Nutri K’. Only after I got the box home did I examine it to see exactly what is different. Answer – not much.
All the Special K range have been revamped with the Nutri K label. They’re still made with the multigrain mix of rice, wheat and barley. However, I did struggle to see exactly what has changed with regards to the vitamins and minerals status. As far as I can tell, the only difference is that zinc has been added and Vitamin C has been removed!
Looking at the nutritional breakdown, per 100g the calories are the same, still 375. Carbs, protein, saturates, fat, fibre and salt are the same. Sugar has reduced from 17g to 15g which is a move in the right direction. This gives Special K an amber traffic light (medium) for sugar instead of red. The amount of wholewheat has changed from 32% to 33% and rice content is 46% up from 45%. Not that you’d notice the difference.
Putting them to the test, they taste the same as when I reviewed them back in May 2013. So this is good news if you like Special K just the way they are.
Oh, and now I've examined the box more carefully, I've decided I’d like to take them up on their Free Growing Kit offer as I’m starting to experiment with growing my own herbs (see how to grow herbs post). You have a choice of a mini seed head kit (parsley, rocket, lettuce or cress) or the growing kit (parsley or rocket). So just another two boxes to buy before I can claim my free growing kit. My children will be happy because they love Special K and I haven’t been buying it as much recently.
