Although I’m loving making my own blends of healthy veg and fruit smoothies with my NutriBullet, I thought I’d see how mine compared with one of the flavours from the Vegesentials range. I liked the look of the ingredients - all natural with nothing added. Plus they are reasonably low in calories.
I purchased the Beetroot, Blueberry & Cucumber which comes in a 250ml or 750ml bottle. The 250ml bottle contains exactly 100 calories.
Opening up the bottle reveals a deep berry and purplish colour and you can't mistake the earthy smell of beetroot. Taking a sip, the liquid is quite thick with lots of bits. This is why smoothies are so good because you’re getting all the fibre from the produce used. This also makes them more filling than juice.
Trying to pick out the individual flavours, clearly beetroot is the strongest flavour and I can faintly taste the cucumber. I don’t really notice the blueberries. However, there's something else. I detect an undercurrent of pineapple.
Looking at the ingredients list I’m surprised to notice another sneaky ingredient – yes, it’s pineapple.
Also hidden in there is mango. Now I love all these ingredients, but I can't help but think the label is a teensy bit misleading!
The order of ingredients is (as shown below) cucumber first followed by pineapple then beetroot then mango. Blueberry accounts for a tiny 2 percent of the smoothie! So really this drink should be called ‘Cucumber, Pineapple and Beetroot smoothie’!
Leaving that aside, how does it taste? In my opinion, this is gorgeous. I love beetroot and regularly make my own variants of beetroot smoothies at home. I really like the thick texture too. It takes longer to drink so you can’t swill it down fast like you would do with a juice. Because I drank it at home, I poured out half into a glass and popped the rest back into the fridge for later.
This flavour is available in bottle sizes 250ml and 750ml.
