Kellogg’s All Bran Chocolate Wheats Review

Kelloggs all bran chocolate wheatsI really didn't want to buy these Chocolate Wheats. I can't understand why manufacturers believe that stuffing chocolate into their breakfast cereals is a good idea. They're all just copying each other now, so it must be helping their sales. And what do I do? Succumb to their tactics of course.

In this case, they were on a special offer. Plus my kids are fed up with seeing porridge oats and Weetabix in the cupboard. So in a moment of weakness I thought, go on then. Just one packet to review.

All Bran Chocolate Wheats are packed in a 450g box and contains 10 x 45g servings. Though knowing my lot, that will equate to about 5 servings.

They look like Shredded Wheat, but brown. The only description can be found on the top of the pack which says they are shredded wholewheat with chocolate filling.

Unfortunately I didn’t see that until I got home. I thought they were just chocolate flavoured shredded wheat type things. I was even less keen on them once I saw they had a chocolate filling.

I poured some out into the bowl and started nibbling on one dry. Yes, it tastes like chocolate shredded wheat and it's OK really. But as I continued chewing, I found the bit of chocolate somewhere inside. It's just a little blob, but once that starts melting in your mouth it covers the rest of the wheaty bits.

I have to admit, I quite like these. While I wouldn't personally include them as part of my healthy eating regime, they do have some good points.

They're fortified with the B vitamins 1,2,3,6, 12 and Folic Acid and Iron. They're also a good source of fibre, though not in the stratospheric league of original All Bran see post - High Fibre breakfast cereals.

Per 100g Chocolate Wheats contain 10g of fibre, with around 4.5g per serving. They’re also low in salt.

Not so great – the ingredients (see below)! They're high in sugar and saturated fat. Chocolate makes up 23% of the cereal!

After my children tried them, they also agreed they liked them, but said they prefer the Honey Nut variety of Shredded Wheat! When it comes to All Bran, it’s the Golden Crunch they love best. I wish they liked plain shredded wheat, I think it's gorgeous, but they just want to add tons of sugar.

Found in the usual supermarkets.
