Provamel Organic Sugar Free Soya Yogurts

A few weeks ago one of my readers informed me that Provamel have brought out two new flavoured soya yogurts which are sugar free. The varieties are Almond and Coconut. And fantastically they have only 50 calories per 100ml.


Since switching to soya milk a few years back, I now dislike the taste of cows milk in tea and coffee. However, I've not yet found a soya yogurt that compares well (tastewise) to yogurt made with milk.

To be fair, I've only tried the plain varieties that don't have added sugar. But even when I've added sweetener or fruit, I still can't get past the soya taste.

I love almonds and coconut, so was really excited to try out these new varieties.

When I eventually found them, I purchased one of each flavour (both in 500ml pots) and opened the almond one first, simply because that had the closest use by date.

Peeling off the lid reveals the same off white colour as regular plain soya yogurt. I gave it a good stir then tasted a teaspoonful. Eurgh. That’s close to the sound I made. Sorry! It just wasn’t what I was expecting. I thought it might perhaps taste a bit like almond milk, which I find quite palatable.

But the almond flavour in this soy yogurt tastes exactly like marzipan, which I can’t stand. It’s this marzipan flavour which put me off ever eating almonds until quite recently when I discovered that almonds are delicious and don’t taste much like marzipan at all.

I persevered with finishing off the almond soya yogurt over the next couple of days. It grew on me slightly. The texture of soy yogurts is slightly heavier than dairy yogurts and I find it difficult to get past that. Still, this is very creamy with teeny flecks of almond. I tried sweetening it slightly which made it more tolerable. For me, this yogurt works better when mixed into other food – eg smoothies.

With coconut being one of my favourite flavours, I pinned all my hopes on this yogurt. Virtually every other coconut yogurt being sold has sugar in it so I don’t buy them. But Provamel’s Soya has none.

Opening the lid and peeling back the foil, it looks identical to the Almond flavour. BUT what a difference. The coconut aroma practically leapt out at me. I sniffed some more and practically drank it in. A rich, sweet coconut aroma which gave me hope for the taste.

It didn't disappoint. This coconut soya yogurt is delicious. Soft, creamy, with a sweet coconut flavour. There’s still the soy taste in the background but the coconut masks it very well.

So for me, these two new flavours were a case of love and hate. I’d happily buy the coconut again but you really have to like the taste of marzipan to enjoy the almond variety.

They’re very low in carbohydrates so great if you’re following a low carb diet. They’re also a good source of protein, and low in salt and saturated fat, with live bacteria to support digestion.

I've only been able to find this yogurt in branches of Holland and Barrett. And even then you have to find a branch with a refrigerated section and hope they've got it in stock.

Ingredients: Almond: Water, hulled soya beans* (8%), almond* (2%), stabiliser (pectin), natural flavouring*, acidity regulators (malic acid, citric acid), sea salt, yogurt cultures (S. thermophiles, L. bulgaricus). *Organically grown/produced.

Nutrition Information per 100g (Almond): 52 calories, 4.0g protein, 3.3g fat, 0.5g saturates, 0.4g carbohydrate, 0g sugars, 1.1g fibre, 0.11g salt.







Ingredients: Coconut: Water, hulled soya beans* (7.8%), coconut milk* (4.5%) (coconut cream, water), stabiliser (pectin), corn starch*, natural flavouring*, sea salt, acidity regulators (citric acid, malic acid), yogurt cultures (S. thermophiles, L. bulgaricus). *Organically grown/produced.

Nutrition Information per 100g (Coconut): 50 calories, 3.9g protein, 3.0g fat, 1.1g saturates, 0.6g carbohydrate, 0g sugars, 1.0g fibre, 0.11g salt.






Naturally lactose free, gluten and wheat free. May contain traces of hazelnuts.

  3. Oh my God that was absolutely gorgeous. Just waiting for these to take off on a larger scale - Tesco seem to be the only option for sugar free yoghurts... And even they're £1.25 per 500g pot. And only plain soya. And only the big "Extra" stores which tend to be in the middle of nowhere :/

    Ohhhh and speaking of Tesco Extra, they've finally started selling sugar free coffee syrups! Not cheap but Jesus there might be some level of consistency that you don't get with TK Maxx. Plus they might start doing their own cheaper version, like they've done with chocolate... Hmmm..? Got to admire my optimism...
