Blue Diamond Almond Breeze Almond Milk Sweetened

Blue Diamond Almond Breeze Almond Sweetened MilkLast year a new brand of almond milk from the US (Blue Diamond) made its entrance into the UK market. This was quite soon after Alpro introduced their Almond and Hazelnut milks, so it seems these dairy and soy alternatives are in some demand.

I was amazed to discover that their Unsweetened Almond milk contains only 14 calories per 100ml. Always keen to try out new (lower calorie) dairy alternatives, the calorie count alone was enough to persuade me to try it out (see review).

However, despite containing added sugar, Blue Diamond's sweetened Almond milk has just 24 calories 100ml. This is certainly one to consider if you prefer a sweeter milk.

What the carton says:

"Made from non-GM California almonds, Almond Breeze is an all natural, great tasting creamy alternative to milk and soya."

Beneficial points to note are listed on the side of the pack and include:

  • Low in saturated fat;
  • All natural ingredients;
  • Free from dairy, eggs and lactose;
  • no soya, peanuts, gluten or MSG;
  • A good source of calcium;
  • Suitable for vegans and vegetarians.

Blue Diamond Almond Breeze Almond Sweetened MilkI love the design of this pack. Everything about it just made me want to get stuck into the delicious drink inside. However, as I wasn't overly keen on the unsweetened variety, I retained a certain amount of skepticism until I'd actually tasted it.

The 'milk' itself looks like regular dairy milk but doesn’t appear quite as white as the unsweetened variety. As for the taste, it has a sweet flavour with a slightly burnt undercurrent and it's lovely and creamy. On its own it's gorgeous. I did try it in my cups of tea, and although it was more tolerable than the unsweetened almond milk, I couldn’t get used to the taste.

In coffee, it’s fine. I mix it with soy milk and froth it up for a cappuccino. One good point here is that it does froth well (when mixed with soy). This is definitely my preferred version, but I do have a sweet tooth.

Although the Blue Diamond Almond Breeze milks are supposed to be available in chilled and ambient, I've only been able to find it in the UHT area of supermarkets – where the long life and powdered milks are.

It does have a long shelf life – when I purchased this pack there was nearly a year to go until its expiry date. After opening, it needs to be refrigerated and used within 5 days.

If you don't like it, there’s a guarantee on the pack which offers your money back if you’re not satisfied with the taste.

There's also a Chocolate flavour Almond Breeze which has 48.5 calories per 100ml.

More information can be found at the Almond Breeze website.

Not suitable as a complete milk food for children under the age of 5 years.
