Fish Pie can be high in fat, but this version from the Waitrose LOVE Life You Count range has a low fat content and only 269 calories per meal.
This 400g chilled ready meal is described as:
‘Chunks of Alaska Pollock and king prawns, in a creamy cheese and spinach sauce topped with mashed potato.’
Although found in the chiller cabinets of Waitrose stores, you can freeze this meal. However, it’s not suitable for microwave cooking – namely because it’s sitting in a foil dish.
The Pollock content is only 15% and prawns account for 5%. The ingredients include a mixture of Cheddar and Pecorino hard cheeses as well as single cream.
With these ingredients Waitrose does well to keep the calories so low. Although I was disappointed to see such a low fish content, when it came to dishing the meal up, there did appear to be more fish and prawns than I expected. The potato came out of the oven with a lovely golden, crunchy top and was thick, creamy and luxurious tasting. The fish and sauce was also delicious, far better than my own versions.
I divided the fish pie between me and my husband (135 calories each) and served it up with lots of vegetables. All in all, it made a well balanced, filling and very tasty meal.
