Although I often make my own soups, I'm finding this winter's range of chilled supermarket soups far too tempting to ignore.
This week I decided the kids could have family favourite 'Heinz Vegetable Soup' (which we all love). But for a change, hubby and I could treat ourselves to something a bit more exotic from Waitrose.
This soup is called Lemon Rasam, described as ‘A spiced chicken soup with vegetables and split peas.’ It’s low in fat and has just 146 calories for half a pot.
With fond memories of travels around Asia, I’m always keen to try out foods with an Asian influence. I’d never heard of Lemon Rasam, but the description sounded so yummy and the calories were so low. The whole pot is 600g which is a perfect amount to split between two people.
Lemon Rasam is part of the Waitrose LOVE Life range of foods. These are selected by Waitrose nutritionists and chefs to give you tasty and nutritionally balanced food.
You can heat the soup in the microwave or on the hob and it can be frozen.
As soon as I prised the plastic lid off, I knew we were in for a special treat. The pot was full to the brim with vegetables and so thick you could eat it with a fork.
It took a good 6 minutes to heat in the microwave, probably because it’s so crammed with ingredients, but it was well worth the wait! OK it wasn’t that long, but the gorgeous smell was so tempting.
It has a lovely light taste but full of spiciness particularly from the ginger. Although green chilli is an ingredient, it’s not at all hot and is classed as ‘mild’ on the pot. There are just so many vegetables in this soup and lots of shredded chicken. Half a pot is filling and fantastic if you’re on a weight loss diet.
If you’re trying to get more vegetables in your diet, it’s good to know that just half the pot provides 2 of your 5 a day. Ingredients include: onion, celery, carrot, yellow split peas, cooked chicken breast spinach, lemon juice, ginger, coriander, garlic and green chilli.
Produced in the UK from British chicken for Waitrose Limited.
Available in the chiller cabinets of waitrose stores and Waitrose online.
