Touch of Yogurt Vanilla Strawberry looked a bit different to the usual ice creams, namely because of the yogurt part. It also has 33% less fat than Walls standard Soft Scoop Vanilla flavour Ice cream.
Always interested in anything promising to be lower in calories and/or fat, I took a closer look. Of course, less fat doesn't always mean less calories, but in this case, it does. One scoop has less than 35 calories. There is also a new Touch of Yogurt Vanilla Peach with flavour with the same number of calories. I purchased the Strawberry variety on this occasion.
This ice cream is packed into a regular shaped and sized 1,700ml tub, which according to the text on the side, should be enough for 17 servings.
This is a strawberry and vanilla swirl type ice cream with a touch of yogurt. In this case, ‘touch’ is certainly apt since it accounts for just 3% of the product. It does have 33% less fat than Walls standard Vanilla Ice cream (like Walls Vanilla Light reviewed here). Often when manufacturers reduce the fat content, they top up the sugar. But in this case the sugar content is lower too, as are the calories.
Since I bought it quite late in the day, I served some up not long after putting it in the freezer. At this stage it had the consistency of a frozen mousse. However, by the next day it was more solid. Once it starts melting again, it reverts to its mousse like state.
Regarding taste, there is a strawberry flavour of sorts but I couldn't really taste any vanilla in the white sections. The ingredients don’t mention what they use for flavouring but they do say they are natural. There isn't any mention of a strawberry though!
My kids liked this a lot so I try to make it a bit healthier by serving it up with fresh strawberries.

I don’t normally enter the ingredients, but for a change, here they are.
Reconstituted Skimmed Milk, Water, Glucose Syrup, Coconut Oil, Fructose Syrup, Sugar, Pasteurised Yogurt (Milk) (3%), Inulin, Glycerol, Whey Solids (Milk), Stabilisers (Locust Bean Gum, Guar Gum, Tara Gum, Carrageenan), Emulsifier (Mono- and Di-Glycerides of Fatty Acids), Acidity Regulator (Citric Acid), Red Beet Juice Concentrate, Flavourings, Colours (Annatto, Mixed Carotenes).
So there are three types of sugar. Homer Simpson would be delighted. It does contain coconut oil which is good, fructose and glucose syrup bad. It’s not suitable for vegetarians.

I am tempted to try this but havent yet seen it in the shops. What did you think of the taste? What puts me off is the big tub size if I dont like it!
ReplyDeleteHi Fran
DeleteHmm, personally I prefer strawberry ice cream to have actual strawberries in it, but this does have a pleasant taste and my kids love it.
Thanks, I think I shall give it a try, perhaps with some strawberries on top!
ReplyDeleteThere is also a new Walls Vanilla Peach Touch of Yogurt which might be worth a try. Exactly the same calories too.
ReplyDeleteooh i like the idea of a peach one, that's a bit different. I hope they come to a store near me soon!
