The makers of Galaxy chocolate have at last brought out their own version of a low calorie instant hot chocolate. This new drink is described as ‘the silky smooth way to enjoy hot chocolate’.It's made with Galaxy chocolate (14%) and currently there are two varieties to choose from: Silky Smooth Hot Chocolate and Silky Smooth Orange Flavoured Hot Chocolate.
With just 40 calories per serving, I couldn't wait to try it out.
At first glance it’s easy to mistake Galaxy’s hot chocolate for a pack of Galaxy Bubbles because they’re packed in the same shaped bag (see photos).In fact, it’s the bag that makes it stand out on the shelf (clever idea Mars) and get noticed as it seems out of place amongst the jars and sachets. The other eye catcher on the pack is the large '40 calories' stamped across the top.
According to the information on the bag, this is an ‘Eco-Pack’. It goes on to state that it's:
‘better for the environment… When you buy this Galaxy Bubbles pack you are helping to reduce the amount of packaging waste thrown away everyday. This pack has 83% LESS packaging than our Galaxy Jars.’
So that’s one good reason to purchase Galaxy’s new low calorie hot chocolate. But what about the taste?
The serving size looks quite small, just 10g, but the instructions advise using two heaped teaspoons. I duly measured out my two teaspoons of hot chocolate and started pouring on some freshly boiled water.
What a surprise! The chocolate powder immediately started making strange crackling noises. At first I thought there must be something wrong with it. Then, as I continued filling up my cup, I realised what was happening. The powder was foaming, creating a thick and frothy topping. Wow.
I did wonder whether the drink underneath would be a bit thin and watery, as there was so much flavour at the top. But I wasn't disappointed. It really does have a smooth texture, there’s no other way to describe it plus it has a rich chocolatey flavour.
Although Galaxy isn’t my favourite chocolate, I must admit that this hot chocolate has now become my favourite. I can’t wait to try out the Orange.
Each 200g pouch has enough powder for 20 servings (if you stick to 2 heaped teaspoons).
I found this in a branch of Sainsbury’s. It’s also available in ASDA. I notice that Galaxy also do a Frothy Top instant hot chocolate so the Galaxy Bubbles may be similar to that.
Suitable for vegetarians, contains soya, contains gluten, contains milk.
Nutrition Information per 10g serving: 40 calories, 1.1g protein, 4.2g carbohydrate, 2.5g sugars, 1.9g fat, 1.5g saturates, 1.0g fibre, 0.54g salt.
I saw this in the supermarkets recently and was unsure to try it or not, think I will now though. How do you rate it against Options Hot Chocolate and/or the Cadbury's Highlights?

Options have always been my favourite and for the last couple of years I've been mainly drinking the white choc Options. However, when it comes to the chocolate flavour, I personally prefer the Galaxy over the others. Even without adding any extra milk or powder, it's still quite rich and yes, the foamy top is pretty amazing
