Kellogg's Nutri-Grain Breakfast Biscuits - NEW

Nutri-Grain Cereal & Milk
If eating biscuits for breakfast is your thing, you're in luck. The huge popularity of Belvita Breakfast biscuits seems to have caught on with more brands creating their own versions.

The latest brand to hit the shelves is from Kellogg’s Nutri-Grain who already have a well established line in snack bars.

Nutri-Grain Breakfast Biscuits currently have three varieties to choose from: Cereal & Milk, Oats & Honey and Fruit & Fibre.

NEW - June 2013: Nutri-grain Chocolate.

Nutri-Grain breakfast biscuits are made with wholegrains to provide slow release carbohydrates. This should help keep hunger at bay for longer. They’re also fortified with 6 B-vitamins and iron and are high in fibre.

Wholegrains account for 43% of the ingredients. These include – oats, wholewheat flour, whole oat flour, wheat flour and oat fibre.

Each deliciously satisfying biscuit is made with a blend of oats and wheat, slow baked until golden and crunchy.’ Packed straight from the oven into handy individually wrapped 4-biscuit packs, they’re designed for breakfast and are perfect for busy mornings.’

And the recommendation for a balanced breakfast on the box is:
4 Kellogg’s Nutri-Grain Breakfast Biscuits + yoghurt or latte, + fruit or smoothie = a balanced breakfast.

Quick review:

I purchased the Oats & Honey variety. Personally, I don't eat biscuits for breakfast, preferring instead to  keep a few in the cupboard for those times when I want something sweet to crunch on. I like the idea that I’m getting a few extra vitamins as well as the fibre that isn’t often found in regular biscuits.

Nutri-Grain Fruit & Fibre
Anyway, I enjoyed this flavour which has a subtle hint of honey. They have a wholesome, grainy texture and you can see bits of oats in them. They’re nice and crunchy but not too sweet. They also look appealing with their oval shape and Nutri-Grain stamped in the middle with little wheat grains around the edge.

Each biscuit has 48 calories and there are four in each pack. Since the recommendation is to eat the whole pack, you'd be eating 192 calories plus the yogurt/latte and fruit or smoothie. I'd rather just snack on this lot throughout the morning rather than eat them all at once.

Although it's to be expected that a biscuit will have a high level of sugar, it is a shame the saturated fat is in the high category (just) with 4g of saturates per 100g. (See nutrition guidelines). However, if you're going to eat a biscuit as a snack, this could be a good choice with the extra B Vitamins and higher fibre content.
