Switching from sugar to a calorie free substitute is a popular choice among slimmers and those looking to control their weight. With more than 25 percent of us buying artificial sweeteners in the UK, we now have more choice than ever before.
Sucralose as a sweetener became enormously popular with the arrival of Splenda. This new calorie free sweetener was promoted as "Made from sugar, so it tastes like sugar" which seemed to imply that it was natural.
However Sucralose, though originating from sugar, undergoes a chemical process which converts it to a calorie-free artificial sweetener. These days Splenda say 'it's not sugar, but it's made from sugar'.
Sucralose is 600 times sweeter than sugar, twice as sweet as saccharin and 3.3 times sweeter than aspartame. Because it's heat stable, it can be used in cooking and baking. Sucralose is widely available in granulated and tablet form as a calorie free alternative to sugar.
Below are some of the artificial sweeteners available in UK stores which are made using Sucralose. They're usually recognisable by their yellow packaging.
