Since switching from dairy milk to soya milk a few years ago, and after trying out numerous different brands, it's generally Alpro that's found in my fridge. So it was with great interest to notice Alpro recently introduced two new alternatives to dairy milk which aren’t made from soy beans.

These two new ‘milks’ are both made from nuts with the nuts in question being almonds and hazelnuts.
Like soya milk, these ‘nut’ milks are suitable for vegetarians and vegans since they’re 100% plant based. They’re available as chilled and ambient with the chilled varieties packed in a similar style to Alpro's fresh soya milks.
Although I've noticed other brands of nut milks in the supermarkets, I've been put off by the calorie content or the price. Plus, I didn't have any idea what I'd use them for.
Still on this occasion, temptation got the better of me and I bought both flavours. Why? Well, the packaging was enticing and they were on special offer. Clever marketing has a large part to play. But one other big plus point for me was the calories. The Alpro Almond milk has only 24 calories per 100ml and the Alpro Hazelnut has 29 calories.
UPDATE: January 2013 - NEW Alpro Unsweetened Almond Milk - 13 calories per 100ml. See post.

- 100% plant based
- Naturally low in saturated fat

First to try out was the Almond Milk.

Alpro say:
“When asked if we could blend roasted Mediterranean almonds with spring water to create a smooth and silky Alpro® almond milk, we thought, ‘Great Idea – let’s find out’. Then we tasted this little pearl of plant goodness with 48 calories a glass and free from saturated fat, and we haven’t stopped smiling since. Unlock the subtle taste of lightly roasted almonds over cereal or simply on its own for a deliciously healthy way to start your day.”
Almonds, I must admit, are my least favourite nut so my expectations were low. The first test was how it tasted on its own. And what a surprise. It’s delicious with a slightly sweet and faint nutty taste, but not obviously almonds. In fact, it’s so tasty I can easily drink it on its own. Poured into my tea, it seemed to make the tea stronger somehow, while in coffee, I can detect a slight burnt flavour – maybe the roast almonds? Using half my regular soy milk mixed with half Almond milk tasted best. I’ll happily buy this again.
Next to try was the Hazelnut.

“How do you turn hazelnut into a delicious drink? When asked if we could blend a pile of hazelnuts with spring water to create a smooth and creamy Alpro® Hazelnut drink, we thought ‘We've just got to try this’. Then we tasted this nutty little pearl of plant goodness, naturally low in saturated fat with 58 calories a glass and we haven't stopped smiling since. Delicious in a home-made smoothie, mixed into hot porridge, or simply as a relaxing drink during the day.”
On opening Alpro Hazelnut milk, the smell of hazelnuts is unmistakable. I did get a surprise when pouring it out though, as it’s a pale chocolate brown colour rather than a creamy white. And the taste – it’s gorgeous. This nut milk tastes exactly like sweet hazelnuts.
While it’s flavour is too strong for tea, it’s given my home made cappuccinos a new lease of life! Using half Alpro Hazelnut milk and half regular soya milk is just like having a shot of hazelnut syrup in a shop bought coffee. And, although I didn’t fancy it on regular cereal, it goes perfectly with a nutty muesli. Probably more than anything else though, Alpro’s Hazelnut milk is absolutely delicious as a drink on its own. Alpro's suggestions include using Hazelnut milk in a home-made smoothie or mixed into porridge.

I do love the taste of these milks, but felt slightly cheated after examining the ingredients list and realising that I had just paid for essentially sugary water, with some thickeners and 2% nut content!! Sugar is the second thing listed after water!!! Shocking...
ReplyDeleteI tend to agree with you on this. But I suspect it's the sugar that helps it taste so nice! I also like that it's still low in calories, despite the sugar, otherwise I probably wouldn't buy it. Some of Alpro's soya milks are sweetened with apple extract, but for soya milk with the least number of ingredients, it's best to go for the organic varieties.
DeleteTotally agree 2% almond whats the other 98%?! No thanks
DeleteI tried this product because i am a big fan of milkshakes but I found that too many milkshakes had a extremely high sugar content. The hazelnut drink was my drink of choice and i love it.
ReplyDeleteA previous poster suggested feeling cheated by the high sugar content but it compares favourably with another top brand milkshake and tastes better in my opinion. in 100 ml of hazelnut drink there is 1.6g sugar, compared to a top brand milkshake which contains 12.4g of sugar per 100ml.
You're right, ready to drink milkshakes usually have loads of sugar and the hazelnut flavour is good enough to drink on its own.
ReplyDeleteI'm sorry, but they have been giving 500ml cartons of the Alpro Almond milk away with an Alpro yoghurt each morning at Leeds train station this week...the yoghurts are nice and creamy...the almond milk on the other hand is the foulest tasting drink ever!....we had an office full of the stuff, as quite a number of us train into work...we couldn't give it away!
ReplyDeleteI would never buy it....I did consider using it as a punishment for my kids!
Oh dear that's a shame. You can ship it all down to me if you like :-) I think these alternative milks are an acquired taste and if you're used to dairy milk then they can take some getting used to. Maybe give the hazelnut a try!
ReplyDeletetried the hazlenut one today very dissapointed hardly any taste and as for the almond milk proper foul taste, neither of these two products would i buy again!!!!!!
ReplyDeleteSince discovering I'm lactose intolerant, I bought unsweetened Alpro Almond Milk. It tastes horrible! I looked at some recipes and I added half a banana per 1 cup and blended it with ground cinnamon. Tastes gorgeous now! You need to sweeten almond milk yourself rather than buy sweetened versions as they are often piled with crap.
DeleteI was ready to buy this milk today till I read the ingredients and I was put off for life. I am in my mid 20s and experiencing breakouts/pimples/rash near my mouth/chin and I am suspecting I am lactose/dairy intolerant. I would rather drink milk and manage the breakouts than drink this alternative with so many ingredients. Agree with the 1st comment.
ReplyDeleteI have been milk intolerant for years, and was very pleased to find Alpro, almond, but my favourite is hazelnut. What I need to know is can I cook with them ?
ReplyDeleteYes absolutely you can cook with them. I make porridge with the almond and hazelnut milk. Just use like regular milk, except you can't freeze it :-)
DeleteI disagree with a lot of people re the almond and hazelnut milk! i think they taste delicious, especially in coffee or porridge and also on cornflakes, weetabix etc. Bit, ive yet to find a nut milk that makes tea taste the same as with cows milk! :( and I love my tea!! Ive tried the soy milk but that doesnt work either!
ReplyDeleteIt takes a while to get used to soy in tea after regular cows milk. I prefer the Alpro Light long life best in tea and coffee now.
DeleteAs with all the above comments Alpro almond and hazelnut drinks are an acquired taste. I really love the hazelnut flavour as a drink on its own or on my bran flakes. I am hooked on this product.
ReplyDeleteSugar is not needed in these healthy drinks. I can add my own honey.
ReplyDeleteyup.
DeleteI love the almond milk its really nice hemp milk is also very nice I never drink cows milk anymore everyone's IBS is loads better in our house no bloating or flatulance anymore ☺️
