Although most tofu is very low in calories, Silken Tofu from Mori-Nu, a Germany company, has one of the lowest calorie counts of all. This firm, soyabean curd has just 62 calories per 100g and only 3g of fat.
Tofu is made from soya beans and this brand of tofu is actually made in the package itself. According to the details on the pack it is:
‘A blend of wholesome soyabeans, water and natural coagulant is poured into each Mori-Nu package. Once hermetically sealed, the rich soymilk is transformed into creamy, silken tofu right inside the box.’
Tofu is a valuable source of protein, calcium, essential amino acids, vitamin A, B vitamins, potassium and iron and makes an excellent alternative to meat for vegetarians. Silken and firm tofu can be used in a variety of ways including as an ingredient in smoothies, stir fries, burgers and soups and is great for entrees and desserts.
Mori-Nu Silken Tofu has a long shelf life of over a year, so it can be stored in the cupboard. It’s available in larger supermarkets.
If you're familiar with tofu, you'll know how easily it breaks up (especially the silken varieties) when you try to slice it or especially stir fry it. To prevent this you need to remove as much of the water as possible which isn't the easiest of jobs.
But here's this great little tofu press which makes it so easy to get the perfect tofu consistency for stir frying frying and slicing. You just pop your tofu into the press and leave it for a minimum of 10 minutes to remove most of the water, and up to 4 hours or overnight for a very firm tofu.
