Diet Fizzy Drinks Linked To Stroke Risk

People on diets often resort to drinking diet fizzy drinks, both as a way of saving on calories, but also because all those fizzy bubbles tend to be filling. But worrying new research carried out by the University of Miami, seemingly shows a strong link between cardiovascular diseases such as stroke and soda consumption. And drinking the diet variety doesn't let you off the hook either.

Their findings, based on a study of 2,564 people in the large, multi-ethnic Northern Manhattan Study (NOMAS), were presented at the American Stroke Association's International Stroke Conference 2011.

The results showed that participants who drank soda had a 48 percent greater risk of suffering from vascular conditions, while those drinking diet soda on a daily basis were 61 percent higher risk when compared with those who drank no soda at all.
