Halo Top Low Calorie Ice Creams Review

Halo Top Peanut Butter low calorie ice creamAfter seeing an advert for Halo Top ice creams in a health magazine, I just had to give them a try. Halo Top Ice creams, from the US, are the ultimate treat for dieters, slimmers and weight watchers everywhere. Each 473ml tub contains the number of calories displayed on the front of the label, ranging from 280 calories to 360 calories for a whole tub!

Not only are they lower calorie, they get a green light for every traffic light! They contain no artificial sweeteners, no artificial flavours or colours and are suitable for vegetarians. Most are gluten free.

Tracking them down wasn’t easy as they’re currently only available in Tesco and at Ocado online. But give it time!

With an incredibly tempting range of flavours I could happily have chosen them all. However, with a price tag of £5.00 per tub, I had to be choosy. I decided to go for one tub of Vanilla Bean and one tub of Peanut Butter Cup.

Others in the UK range include:
  • Cinnamon Roll
  • Sea Salt Caramel
  • Chocolate Chip Cookie Dough
  • Chocolate Flavoured
  • Mint Chip.
There are a lot more varieties in the US including some dairy free options. The're not over here yet, but it probably won't be long.

There are other low calorie alternative ice cream type desserts available, but many are packed with weird, synthetic and artificial ingredients.

What I noticed immediately about Halo Top ice cream is that the first ingredients are exactly what you’d find in real ice cream. For example, milk and eggs. Other ingredients can be seen in the ingredients list below. The calories are kept down with the use of the sweeteners erythritol and stevia (steviol glycosides).

Not all the ingredients are a nutritional delight though. There is some corn syrup in there as well as sugar, but these are minimal.

Nutrition wise, they are low in fat, low in saturates, low in sugar and low in salt which is great if you’re keeping an eye on your salt, fat and/or sugar levels. It’s got some fibre in there from the prebiotics (the gums – read here for more information from Chris Kresser on gums). This is one ice cream whereby you could actually eat the whole tub and probably NOT gain weight!

Of course the most important part is the taste. I chose the Peanut Butter for my daughters as they’re addicted to the stuff, while I was more interested in the Vanilla.

I was expecting the ice cream to be difficult to scoop out, but it was softer than expected (because I served it up shortly after buying it). It does need a few minutes out of the freezer to soften a bit. The peanut butter does taste of peanut butter but more like the powdered type. I absolutely love the vanilla which is liberally speckled with bits of vanilla.

Both have a similar texture. It’s soft and smooth, but a bit icy, with not quite the same creamy texture as a regular ice cream, but it’s hardly noticeable.

I’ll definitely be purchasing the Vanilla again and will experiment with the other flavours in the future.

I've since purchased the Sea Salt Caramel, and oh my goodness, it's incredible. Absolutely delicious and the whole tub has 320 calories.

At the moment, the closest rival to Halo are Oppo who I reviewed last year. Their low calorie ice cream is also sweetened with Stevia. I have to admit my family went off Oppo after the last few tubs I bought had a strange texture and didn’t taste as nice as they originally did.
