Deliciously Ella Yellow Thai Curry Review

As someone who’s always advocated the benefit of eating loads of vegetables as a way of losing weight or maintaining weight, it's been fantastic how many new and exciting vegetable dishes are out there.

This vegetable interest is partly down to the growing popularity in plant-based meals and possibly the many thousands of beautifully photographed veggie dishes on Instagram.

One of the well known vegan recipe creators is Ella Mills, a.k.a. Deliciously Ella. I have most of her recipe books and love the variety of recipes. But, even though it’s great if you have time to cook from scratch, for many of us, that’s not possible every day.

For busy days it’s helpful to have the odd ready meal on standby in the freezer. And its good to know they’re not all unhealthy. So I was really excited to see that Deliciously Ella had brought out a range of frozen ready meals. I couldn’t wait to try them out.

easyJet Menu Choices Review

Not so long ago if you took a flight anywhere, you’d be served free food and drink during your journey, even if it was just a short flight from the UK to Europe. But those days are gone and now your choice is eat nothing or buy from the on-board selection.

I don’t often fly anywhere, but when I do, I like to bring my own snacks just in case there’s nothing healthy to choose from. A few weeks ago I flew on easyJet for the first time and was pleasantly surprised at their menu choice.

Waitrose Vegetarian Cottage Pie Review

Waitrose vegetarian cottage pieThere are days when I don’t feel up to cooking a meal from scratch. When it’s been a long day, everyone’s hungry and I need something filling and tasty that we all enjoy.

It was one of those days when I popped into a branch of Waitrose on the way home, searching for inspiration. With the enormous choice of meals available these days, it can be overwhelming and I ended up going back to a trusted favourite, cottage pie.

Snact Fruit Jerky and Banana Bars Review

Snact Banana BarsIf you’re looking for ‘healthier’ type snack bars, it’s not hard to find them these days. From bliss balls to protein bars, there is no shortage of alternatives to chocolate bars.

Many of the latest snack bars are made mainly from dates with other fruit and /or nuts mashed together. For example NAKD bars and Deliciously Ella.

But here is a new type of snack bar, called ‘waste-fighting banana bars’ which can really make you feel good about eating them. And they’re not made from dates!

Pure Bite 80 Calorie Crispy Snacks Review

Pure Bite popped rice clusters blueberry & cranberryAs someone who has long advocated the principle of snacks under 100 calories, I’m delighted to see that that Pubic Health England, through their Change4Life campaign, is recommending that children eat snacks with fewer than 100 calories. There’s no harm in adults doing the same!

With this in mind I was delighted to receive a sample of a snack by the company Bite UK Ltd called Pure Bites who have snacks with around 80 calories. They won a Great Taste Award in 2017 so I was looking forward to finding out what they’re all about.

M&S Twice the Fibre Porridge Review

M&S Twice the fibre porridgePorridge is such a healthy food and it’s so versatile. Whether you like it made the traditional way or as a trendy Bircher muesli, the health benefits of porridge oats are the same. One of these benefits is its fibre content.

Porridge oats contain soluble fibre and insoluble fibre, both of which are beneficial to gut health. Regular porridge oats contain around 7-9g of fibre per 100g which is good. But you can do a lot better with a new porridge in Marks & Spencer called ‘Twice the Fibre Porridge’.

Bai Antioxidant Fusion Coconut Drink Review

bai antioxidant infusion drinksCoconut water was all the range last year and I’ve tried and tested a fair few of them (see post). Coconut water takes a bit of getting used to and the taste isn’t for everyone.

However, I recently discovered a different type of coconut drink by the brand Bai which is a blend of coconut water and sweetened with natural sources and natural flavours.

Before purchasing a bottle, I checked the ingredients to make sure there were no nasties in there, and was pleasantly surprised to see an ingredient which research has recently shown helps support a healthy brain. It also has just 5 calories per 530ml bottle!

Calorie Guide to Ryvita Crackers and Crispbreads

Many years ago when I embarked on one of my first ever diets, all I knew about losing weight was that I needed to reduce calories. One of my first decisions was to replace bread with crackers and Ryvita were the first ‘diet’ product I ever bought.

Back then the range was very limited. As far as I can remember there was the Original Rye crispbread and the Ryvita Crackerbread – a very low calorie option.

Today however, the Ryvita range takes up an enormous area of the supermarket crispbread and cracker area. Besides their original Rye crispbreads and crackerbreads, they now also sell rye cakes, rye bakes, flatbreads and a higher protein crispbread.

Here is the calorie and nutrition guide to the range of Ryvita available at the time of writing – June 2018.

Pip & Nut Almond Drink with Honey & Vanilla Review

Pip & Nut almond milk drinksIn my quest to make the perfect matcha latte, I’ve been trying out various dairy free nut milks. It used to be Alpro dominating the market, but now there are so many more to choose from. Unfortunately they're not cheap and they do vary quite a bit in terms of nut content which affects the calories and taste.

Here’s yet another new name on the block. Pip & Nut is becoming a familiar sight in health food stores with their range of dairy free nut milk drinks, nut butters and squeezy nut butter packets.

Pip & Nut have three different dairy free almond nut milks: Unsweetened (20 calories per 100ml), with Honey & Vanilla (27 calories per 100ml), with Coconut (22 calories per 100ml). I purchased the Honey & Vanilla.

Kellogg’s NO Added Sugar Granola Review

Kellogg's No added sugar granola coconut cashew almondGranola is taking over the breakfast cereal aisles. If you're into granola, it seems there's no end to the new brands and varieties appearing on the supermarket shelves. And the granolas that already exist are now being produced in low sugar or no added sugar varieties.

One brand that caught my eye a few weeks ago was this new No Added Sugar Granola by Kellogg’s.

There are three varieties to choose from: Coconut, Cashew & Almond; Apricot & Pumpkin Seeds and Super Grains Granola Cranberry, Sultana & Spelt. Since I don’t like dried fruit in cereal, I decided to see what the Coconut, Cashew Almond granola was like.

Alpro Plain No Sugar Soya Yogurt Review

Alpro unsweetened no sugar plain soy yogurtHere’s another product from Alpro - a new zero sugar, soy-based plain yogurt. I discovered this quite by chance as my usual favourite Onken set natural yogurt was out of stock. I really wanted a plain yogurt and but also one which was relatively low in calories.

I knew Alpro’s plain yogurt had just 50 cals per 100ml so decided to get a pot of that. However, there was this new variety with absolutely no sugar and only 43 calories per 100ml.

Weetabix Range, Nutrition, Calories and Ingredients

Weetabix have such a wide range of breakfast cereals, I have decided to update my earlier Weetabix post (How healthy are your Weetabix) to reflect what's available in the supermarkets today.

Original Weetabix breakfast biscuits are still at the top in the 'healthy' ratings with a green traffic light symbol for low sugar, fat, saturated fat and salt. But there's a newer addition called Weetabix Protein which also scores a full house for green traffic lights - (you can see the nutritional information further in this post) and it has nearly double the amount of protein of regular Weetabix.

For this post I've included nutritional details for the whole range of Weetabix including Ready Brek and Oatibix. To date, there are 24 varieties!

Public Health England Calorie Awareness Campaign

Public Health England (PHE) have recently released a new strategy and campaign designed to slow down the obesity epidemic in this country. Their main focus is on calories.

They have launched the One You Campaign, targeting adults to become aware of the calories they consume each day. They’ve come up with the mantra 400, 600, 600. This relates to allowing ourselves a maximum of 400 calories for breakfast, 600 calories for lunch and 600 calories for dinner.

While I’m all for counting calories, as far as I’m concerned, these numbers are as meaningless as the old mantra ‘2,000 calories a day for women and 2,500 calories a day for men’.

Squirrel Sisters Raw Energy Snack Bars Review

Squirrel Sisters coconut and cashew nut raw energy barI’ve been weaning myself of sweet snacks as much as possible to reduce the amount of sugar in my diet. But I still keep the odd sweet snack in my desk drawer as a little treat, usually a Nakd bar.

But Nakd have many rivals, one of which are these  raw energy snack bars made by Squirrel Sisters. I’ve been reading about them for a while but it’s only recently I’ve actually been able to find them in a branch of Holland & Barrett.

There are four varieties: Cacao Orange, Cacao Brownie, Coconut Cashew and Raspberry Ripple. I purchased one Cacao Orange and one Coconut Cashew.

Califia Farms Almond Unsweetened Vanilla Review

Califia Farms unsweetened vanilla almond milkSince learning about the incredible health benefits of Matcha green tea, I’ve been making it my mission to find a way of including it my daily diet. Unfortunately, I’ve never enjoyed drinking green tea, or any tea without milk, so I figured that turning my green matcha powder into a matcha latte would be the way to go.

I’ve read some lovely recipes for vanilla or almond milk matcha lattes so I started searching for alternative almond milks that I haven’t yet tried.

There has been an explosion in the range of non dairy milks lately, so it wasn’t difficult finding alternatives to dairy. One of the latest to hit the supermarket shelves is made by Califia Farms. They have two different almond-based drinks: Unsweetened Almond (16 calories per 100ml) and Unsweetened Almond Vanilla (17 calories per 100ml).
