Gluten Free Nutri-Brex Weetabix Alternative Review

With the continuing demand for gluten free food, you can now find a gluten free alternative to most wheat-based products. This is great news for those who are gluten or wheat intolerant as there is a lot more choice. But it’s also giving us a chance to try other types of grains.

Nutri-brex plainOne grain which you may not have heard of is sorghum. It’s nothing to do with chewing gum but is apparently the fifth most important cereal crop in the world. And it’s this grain which is the main ingredient of Nutri-Brex – a gluten free alternative to Weetabix or other wheat based breakfast biscuits.

I’d seen Nutri-Brex in Holland & Barrett but never been tempted to buy them. I’m not gluten intolerant and am quite happy with the Weetabix I currently buy. However, while visiting the Gluten and Allergy free show at Olympia this year, the Nutri-Brex stand were offering visitors the chance to sample their range.

I tried a small amount of the Nutri-Brex Coconut & Crispy Rice with coconut milk and was really impressed. So I decided to buy a box and let the family try them out as well.

They also suggest other ways of eating them, such as crumbling over yoghurt and fruit for a ‘crunchy tasty topping’ and whizzing them into a smoothie.

Nutri-Brex hold together well and soak up a lot of milk, especially if you use warm or hot milk. They’re very filling too. The Coconut variety has a hint of cinnamon which I can taste more than the coconut. However if you add coconut milk it helps bring out the coconut flavour more.

I’d never have thought these weren’t a wheat product and couldn’t tell the difference. They’re not as densely packed as a Weetabix, in that they are more flaky, but once you put milk on them, they’re quite similar.

The Coconut variety does have added sugar and golden syrup which isn’t so great. But they have added psyllium husk which is fantastic for digestion and ‘keeping things moving’ digestive wise!

The box recommends 3 Nutribrex biscuits but I'm happy with one or two. Three coconut crispy biscuits provide 201 calories (dry) and the plain variety is 174 calories for 3 biscuits.

My kids weren’t overly impressed. One found them not sweet enough! The other said they were OK but that’s mainly because she prefers other types of cereal these days instead of Weetabix. My husband thought they were fine and said he’d be happy to eat these, though perhaps would prefer the plain ones as he adds his own fruit on top.

The healthier of the two varieties is the Plain one which is low in sugar, saturated fat and salt, while the Coconut version is medium on the traffic light scale for sugar, fat and salt.

Nutri-Brex are widely available in larger supermarkets as well as Holland & Barrett.
