In an almost saturated (excuse the pun) health water market, it seems there’s always room for one more brand. It has to be different and stand out, and this one certainly does that.
Hey Like Wow ‘a revolutionary new soft drink’ is a flavoured vitamin rich water. While there are other vitamin waters out there, this one is quite unique in that you dispense the vitamins into the drink yourself.
About the drink:
‘Hey Like Wow is Sugarwise certified, vegetarian and vegan friendly. It contains pure mineral water only, topped with a cap containing a powdered fruit + vitamin formula (calcium, B6,C,D) that is released into the water as soon as the cap is pressed down, and is also the first UK soft drink to contain zero artificial colours, sweeteners, or preservatives.’There are two sizes – 250ml and 500ml. They all contain 33% RDA of Vitamins B6, C and D while 250ml varieties also contain calcium.
Flavours in the 250ml range: Orange; Blackcurrant; Apple, Pear & Lychee; Orange & Pineapple (calcium); Dragonfruit & Apple; Mango & Passionfruit or Apple.
Flavours in the 500ml range: Pomegranate & Acai; Lemon & Elderflower; Hibiscus, Grape & Pear; Mango, Lime & Coconut or Orange.

Hey Like Wow: Orange, Blackcurrant, Apple, Pear & Lychee |
I’ve never liked drinking plain water, instead flavouring it with sugar free squash or choosing coconut water when I’m out and about. I also don’t like fizzy drinks, so was pleased to see these were of the non-fizzy variety.
The main downside with most sugar free drinks is they contain artificial sweeteners. Hey Like Wow gets around this by using Stevia and natural flavourings such as papaya powder.
The see through plastic bottles are coloured according to the flavour. However, the water starts off as clear because the vitamins and flavours are contained in the special lid. In order to release the powder into the drink you need to take off the plastic cap and push down the little red button on top.

Anyway, onto the Blackcurrant. I’d kept this in the fridge so it was nice and cold and I ended up swilling it down while stuck on a crowded and overheated tube somewhere between Charing Cross and Baker Street. I found this quite refreshing and managed to get the plastic wrapper off without resorting to any implement other than my fingernail.
While I liked this flavour, my friend said it reminded her too much of Dioralyte – the rehydration drink! I couldn’t comment on that as I’ve never tried the stuff myself.
The Orange flavour wasn't offensive in any way and tasted similar to other orange flavoured waters. However, I found it tasted a bit 'chemically' if I'm totally honest, but my daughter thought otherwise and liked it.
Overall, there is a lot to like about these drinks, apart from the name, but that’s a matter of choice! Hey Like Wow may sound hip and trendy today, but for how long?
Once you get past the name and look into the ingredients, there’s nothing to concern yourself with. In fact, if you’re looking for something to drink, apart from water, it’s one of the healthiest drinks out there.
Low in calories, it has the benefit of added vitamins (though it doesn’t mention what form these vitamins are, not that most people will care) and has the novelty factor that may just encourage younger consumers to buy it instead of gravitating towards the more sugary drinks.
Pricewise it’s competitive too, costing just 99p for the 250ml version from Tesco. It’s certainly a lot cheaper than coconut water.
At the time of writing, Hey Like Wow is only available in Tesco supermarkets.

Tesco also sell a similar drink but based around whey concentrate - same injection type system. Problem for me was that they don't always work properly, and some ofthe powder is wasted and stuck to the inside of the cap. I looked like a bit of a savage opening it up and trying to lick it out of the cap. Otherwise handy, though and I can see these injection things becoming more popular.
ReplyDeleteHa ha! Sounds like this type of lid needs some refining. I haven't heard of the Tesco one which I imagine is a protein drink. I'll check it out. Thanks for your comment.
DeleteThe name Hey Like Wow was a common phrase with Californian surfers in the sixties, and mentioned in Scooby-Doo decades ago, so it transcends trends and is likely to continue to age well. Honest review, enjoyed it.
ReplyDeleteOf course, I remember now. Shaggy, Scooby-Doo. Favourite cartoon ever! Thanks for your comments.
