Eating out while trying to be healthy isn't always easy, but if you're in London, there is a wide choice of venues to try where you can indulge while reaping the benefits of healthy cuisine.

Marks & Spencer Chilled Soup Range 2017-2018

M&S Tomato & Basil soupIt’s been a few years since I updated the Marks & Spencer chilled soups range. During this time, M&S have made quite a few changes, including introducing several new varieties.

Some of these reflect the ‘trendy’ ingredients of the moment, such as cauliflower and kale, but there are still plenty of old favourites such as the Country Vegetable and Cream of Tomato.

Read on to see the latest selection of Marks & Spencer’s soups, which can be found in the chiller section of M&S Food halls.

Top 30 Lower Sugar Chocolate Bars UK

With so much being written about the bad effects of sugar on our health, many of us are actively looking to reduce our sugar consumption. This often means cutting down on sweet treats such as chocolate.
Divine 85 percent dark chocolate bar
But, not all chocolate is bad. In fact, chocolate, or pure cacao, is full of nutrients. For example, it contains magnesium, some B vitamins, iron and flavonoids which are potent antioxidants. It’s even advised that we eat one to two squares of chocolate each day for its health benefits.

If you’re looking for a chocolate that’s healthy, then you need to search out those which are low in sugar! Yes, they do exist. However, you’ll need to head away from the ‘milk’ variety and head towards the Dark Side.

Dragon’s Den Bare Naked Zero Calorie Rice Review

I purchased this pack of Bare Naked low calorie rice quite a while ago. It was an impulse buy and once it was home and packed away in the cupboard, I’ve never felt inclined to eat it.

But, since going back on the 5:2 diet for a couple of days a week, filling up on virtually calorie free, if somewhat tasteless food, suddenly became very tempting.

In the past I’ve tried Zero Noodles and Eat Water low calorie noodles and found them to be virtually identical in taste and texture so I wasn’t expecting anything too different with this brand of rice. However, they weren’t quite the same.

Gluten Free Nutri-Brex Weetabix Alternative Review

With the continuing demand for gluten free food, you can now find a gluten free alternative to most wheat-based products. This is great news for those who are gluten or wheat intolerant as there is a lot more choice. But it’s also giving us a chance to try other types of grains.

Nutri-brex plainOne grain which you may not have heard of is sorghum. It’s nothing to do with chewing gum but is apparently the fifth most important cereal crop in the world. And it’s this grain which is the main ingredient of Nutri-Brex – a gluten free alternative to Weetabix or other wheat based breakfast biscuits.

Whole Earth Sweetener with Stevia Review

Whole Earth Sweetener cubes and granulesI first came across the new Whole Earth Sweetener Co. sweeteners while in a branch of Starbucks. I sweeten my coffee with Truvia but noticed they’d replaced their regular Truvia packets with Whole Earth 0 cal sweetener packets.

Examining the packet more closely, I realised it's another Stevia sweetener, like Truvia, which is bulked up with erythritol. Each packet has zero calories and is equivalent to the sweetness of one teaspoon of sugar.

Most Popular Snacks in Our Fridges

According to a survey carried out by Appliances Direct, home owners in the UK open the door and look in the fridge up to 14 times every day! They also check the contents of their cupboards around 9 times a day.

I know this is something I'm guilty of doing, especially when I'm working from home. I go into the kitchen frequently to make cups of tea and coffee, which inevitably means opening the fridge door.

The snacks I choose tend to be something like fruit, yogurt or nuts. But only one of these makes the top 5 popular snacks in the UK.

M&S Pet Food For Cats Review

M&S cat food selection boxI’m making a slight deviation away from my usual food reviews. This time I decided to review a pet food but it’s not me doing the tasting!!!

My two finicky cats persuaded me that this cat food from Marks and Spencer should definitely be on my shopping list next week.

Low Sugar Granola from FUEL10K

Back in December I wrote a blog post called ‘Top 40 High Sugar Breakfast Cereals’. Naturally these are the breakfast cereals I would advise NOT to consume on a regular basis!

Granolas, although incredibly delicious, are nearly always high in sugar and calories. Quite a few granolas feature in my top 40 high sugar breakfast cereals list, including those made by FUEL10K.

But there’s great news! FUEL10K have recently launched two new LOW SUGAR granolas which are being sold by Tesco.

Erythritol Zero Calorie Sugar Alternative Review

I’ve been researching different types of sweeteners, in particular, those which are more natural and less processed. Of course, any type of sweetener which is purchased in a bag or bottle has been through some kind of processing. However, there are some which are being touted as a more natural and healthier alternative to regular sugar.

One of these is erythritol. This is a zero calorie sugar replacement which doesn’t produce the same type of blood sugar increase as regular table sugar.

M&S Skinny Pork Sausages Review

Sausages, to be properly juicy and tasty should really have a high meat content and they are usually high in saturated fat as well. I steer clear of those.

Fortunately there are some much lower calorie sausages and these Outdoor Bred Skinny Sausages from Marks and Spencer have only 78 calories each and are gluten free.

Weetabix already have a wide variety of breakfast cereals, including their Original (and best) Weetabix, Banana Weetabix, Golden Syrup Weetabix, High Protein Weetabix, Organic Weetabix and the popular Weetabix Minis.

But it seems those behind the scenes at Weetabix have decided we need more choice. So, if you haven’t seen them yet, Weetabix have introduced two new varieties of Weetabix under the 'Additions' range. These are: Coconut & Raisin and Apple & Raisin.

Marks & Spencer Madagascan Vanilla Iced Dessert

Marks and Spencer count on us vanilla ice creamWhile wondering around the M&S food hall a few weeks ago, I found myself in front of the freezer section. I don’t usually make it this far as I spend so long drooling over the delights in the fridge section.

But here I was and I immediately noticed these tubs of Count on Us Madagascan Vanilla Iced Dessert. Just 85 calories per 1/8th of the tub, which is 63g or about 2 ice cream scoops. After a quick scan of the ingredients, I decided this was worth trying out.

Sainsbury’s Noodles, Chips and Pasta Vegetables

If you’ve been following the latest trends in food whereby you substitute noodles for courgetti (courgette noodles), you may be interested to see the range of ready prepared vegetables in Sainsbury’s.

It’s no longer just courgettes or spiralised veggies. Sainsbury’s have come up with ready prepared alternatives to crinkle cut chips, as well as lasagne sheets and rice.

They are a dieters dream!

Vita Coco Coconut Milk Drink Review

Vita Coco, makers of the popular Vita Coco range of coconut waters, have created their own brand of coconut milk. Described as delicious, smooth & dairy free it can be found in the chilled milk section of larger supermarkets.

Vita Coco’s coconut milk drink has added calcium plus other vitamins and minerals and has just 30 calories per 100ml.

Shredded Wheat Multigrain Rye & Quinoa Review

I’ve passed the new Shredded Wheat Multigrain Rye & Quinoa packs a few times in various supermarkets, but haven't bought them because I'm trying to retrain my kids into choosing porridge in the morning.

But I'm not having much luck as most often they just want cold, crunchy cereal.

However, on this particular shopping trip, I succumbed to price when I noticed them being sold in Poundland. So into the basket they went and home for review.

Starbucks Almond Milk Calorie Comparison

I adore coffee. For me it’s a treat, everyday! While at home I use my lovely Nespresso machine, but whenever I’m out, it’s Starbucks every time. I just love it. I always make sure I’m armed with my Starbucks thermos flask as this means I get a discount for bringing my own cup.

While my drink of choice is a Soya latte, Starbucks have now increased their range of alternatives to dairy milk. Last year they introduced coconut milk and now from March, Almond milk is also on the menu. If you’re looking to save calories, choosing almond milk can help.

Hey Like Wow – Sugar Free Low Calorie Vitamin Drink

If you heard there was a new product called ‘Hey Like Wow’, would you have the slightest inkling as to what it could be? No? Me neither. In fact, it’s a new type of health drink currently available in branches of Tesco supermarkets.

In an almost saturated (excuse the pun) health water market, it seems there’s always room for one more brand. It has to be different and stand out, and this one certainly does that.

Hey Like Wow ‘a revolutionary new soft drink’ is a flavoured vitamin rich water. While there are other vitamin waters out there, this one is quite unique in that you dispense the vitamins into the drink yourself.

SOLGAR – Your Body is Designed to Move

According to new research commissioned by vitamin experts Solgar UK, Brits will spend more than 18 YEARS of their adult lifetime sitting down! Broken down into more meaningful figures, this is an average of 7.5 hours every day in a chair.

If you want to increase your weight loss, combing diet with exercise will help speed up the whole process. But even if you’re not dieting, it’s still just as important to try getting at least some sort of exercise everyday.

It doesn’t matter what age you are, we all need to move. As the latest campaign by supplement company SOLGAR say ‘Your Body is Designed to Move’.

Calorie Comparisons McVitie’s Digestive Thins

Mcvities Digestive ThinsEven though I rarely buy packets of biscuits these days, I couldn’t resist stopping by the new range of McVitie’s Digestives Thins to check out the calorie content.

McVitie’s Digestives Milk Chocolate Thins have slightly more calories per 100g than the regular sized Chocolate Digestives but per biscuit, there are 52 fewer calories!

This is quite a big saving if you’re counting every calorie. Even eating two Thins provides fewer calories than a single regular sized Chocolate Digestive.

Is Your Waist Size a Better Health Indicator than BMI?

Reported in the news last week, we were told scientists have discovered the size of our waist is a better indicator of cardiovascular health than BMI.

This is old news! This has been known for years and was reported in the mid-1990s. Then in 2003, researchers were measuring the value of the waist to height ratio as a predictor of metabolic risk. Many others have reported the same.

In a way this is good news because it’s really easy measuring your waist.

Uncle Ben’s Rice Mini Pouches Review

Uncle Bens Mini Rice Wholegrain RiceUncle Ben’s Express rice has been around for years and it's something I always have in the cupboard.

These handy packets of ready to microwave rice pouches are convenient as they have a long shelf life and are quick to prepare. What could be easier than peeling back the edge of a pack and popping it into the microwave for 2 minutes?

Onken Porridge2Go Review

While working at a Regus office last week, I noticed a buffet table being set up in the reception area. Once it was ready, everyone working there was invited to help themselves.

Wonderful! However, this wasn’t your regular kind of buffet table. This was a promotional event for the new Onken Porridge2Go pots and the entire table was filled with little individual pots of porridge.

Porridge lover that I am, how could I resist? I helped myself to 2 pots (one for a lucky family member) and another for me. I ignored the sachets of honey, as this porridge is already sweetened.

6 Healthy Tips for Pancake Day on Shrove Tuesday

I love pancakes but they're something I rarely eat these days. Back in the day when I used to indulge in pancakes, my favourite way of eating them was to drown them in maple syrup and top with a large scoop of vanilla ice cream. Oh so delicious, but so calorific.

However, there are healthier ways of eating the good old pancake, and in fact, when cooked the French (crepe) way, they're really thin so have fewer calories.

If you're looking for alternative ways of enjoying your pancakes without worrying about piling on the pounds on Pancake Day, have a read of the following ideas and recommendations.

Kellogg’s Ancient Legends Porridge Review

Here’s a new instant porridge mix from Kellogg’s which I discovered quite by accident in a local branch of Poundland. It's called Ancient Legends and contains a mix of spelt, barley, oats, chia seeds and dates. Of these, it’s spelt that’s the ancient grain.

Alternative grains are becoming an increasingly popular alternative to regular wheat these days, but some can be an acquired taste. So mixing them up into regular porridge oats is a great way of gradually introducing other grains to our taste buds.

The box contains 8 individual sachets (30g) with each portion containing 118 calories (if made up with water).

Starbucks Espresso Nespresso Compatible Pods

Starbucks Espresso Nespresso POD coffee capsulesI adore coffee and can’t get through the day without at least one cappuccino. Although I have a Nespresso coffee machine at home which produces the most delicious coffee, my favourite coffee of all comes from Starbucks.

And finally, it looks like it might be possible to recreate that Starbucks taste at home as Starbucks have finally produced Nespresso compatible coffee pods.

So as soon as possible, I hotfooted it down to my local Starbucks and purchased one box of 10 Fairtrade Espresso Roast capsules for £2.95.

Rude Health Porridge Hazelnut Butter with Cacao

Rude Health Porridge Hazelnut Butter with CacaoUsually I’d totally dismiss any breakfast cereal containing chocolate. They’re often the most unhealthy, packed with refined sugars and high in calories. Definitely not the best way to start the day. But here is an exception.

Rude Health have brought out a gorgeous hazelnut porridge which is packed with nuts and cacao nibs and incredibly, it’s low in sugar! If you love chocolate and hazelnuts, I'm sure you'll like this.
