Plenish Organic Cashew Milk Review

I've finally found an alternative to dairy milk which gives my favourite Alpro Soya Light a run for its money. This is a cashew nut milk from Plenish, certified by the Soil Association as Organic.

Since purchasing some of these new age cookery books from the likes of Deliciously Ella and the Hemsley sisters, I’ve been exploring further uses for nuts. One includes making cashew nut crème which is incredibly lovely.

As cashew nut cream is so nice, I thought I’d give this cashew nut milk from Plenish a try. Although expensive, it was on offer this particular day, knocked down from its usual £3.49 (ouch) to a slightly more reasonable £2.89. I was particularly happy to see so few ingredients, just nuts, water and salt. And it has just 34 calories per 100ml.

Here’s what Plenish have to say about their nut milk:

Plant Power Inside

Our deliciously plenishing cashew m*lk is bursting with organic nutty goodness. It is a natural source of protein to maintain healthy muscles and bones, making it the perfect post-workout pick-me-up. With just three simple ingredients and no additives, preservatives or sweeteners, and a high nut content that means more nutrients for you.

When you replace saturated fats for heart-healthy monounsaturated fats found in this cashew m*lk you can reduce blood cholesterol levels. High cholesterol can lead to heart disease, so make the switch. It's also a good source of copper that protects your precious cells from oxidative stress and helps your immune system operate normally.

At Plenish we're big believers that you get out of life what you put in. So eat and drink products with integrity (mostly plants), and your body will reward you with the vigour to chase your dreams. Now that's plant power.

Organic, Dairy free, Unsweetened, Organic cashews, filtered water, himalayan salt and that's it, More nuts, more nutrition, Delicious, refreshing taste, A source of plant based protein, A natural source of the antioxidant copper, Low in saturated fats and high in heart-healthy monounsaturated fats, 3 simple ingredients; No additives or preservatives

Use 250ml of this organic cashew drink per day as part of a balanced diet and healthy lifestyle.’

Since I’m used to the sweetness of my soya milk, I wasn’t expecting anything resembling sweetness from this milk, as there are no sweeteners or sugar in it. However, drinking some on its own, I was amazed. It’s gorgeous. It’s creamy and silky which kind of provides its own mild sweetness.

I gave some to my youngest to try, and she downed the glass and asked for another. Next step was to try some added to my tea. I haven’t had any luck with nut milks in my tea or coffee.  But again, I was rewarded with a creamy and pleasant taste and a perfectly delicious cup of tea. It found it didn’t drastically alter the flavour in the way that almond, hazelnut or coconut milks do.

Next test was frothing for a cappuccino. It didn’t produce a dense froth like my soya milk, but it certainly doubled in volume with a topping of airy bubbles. I mixed it with my coffee and again, it tasted creamy, making a delicious cappuccino.

It wasn’t all good news though. I’d made this coffee in a glass mug, which unfortunately after a few minutes of settling, did curdle. Well, it separated and looked pretty disgusting, although the taste didn’t change. Swilling it around in the mug worked well to mix it back together again, but it does separate again.

I didn’t notice this with my tea. Maybe it has something to do with the fact I added it cold to my tea but heated it to boiling for my coffee.

I also made a chia pudding with just chia seeds, stevia, cashew milk and some grated vanilla. This worked fantastically well to make a creamy and sweet, dairy free dessert.

Unfortunately it’s gone back to its usual price, but I will continue to buy a carton each week, as a treat.

Plenish also make an Organic Almond milk which is the same price and also has 3 ingredients. This one has 43 calories per 100ml. I'll be reviewing this one in a few weeks.
