Waitrose Low Alcohol Cider Review

Waitrose low alcohol ciderAs I may have mentioned over the years, I’m not much of a drinker. In fact, it’s fair to say I don’t drink at all (these days). Probably the main reason for me is the calories. I just don’t like alcohol enough to waste calories on booze when I could put those calories to much better use eating healthy food!

The only time I buy alcohol now is for cooking purposes and this is why I purchased a bottle of Waitrose low alcohol cider. I was making a sausage & cider stew from the Hemsely & Hemsely recipe book and wanted to make sure I had all the right ingredients.

The recipe didn’t actually specify low alcohol cider, but while searching for a suitable sized bottle, I came across this Waitrose own brand version. It’s sold in a 500ml glass bottle with an alcohol content of less than 1% vol. It's got some great reviews on the Waitrose website, so it was an easy choice to make.

I needed 500ml for the recipe but before decanting the lot into the pot, I thought it at least deserved a taste test on its own. I was prepared for the usual strong alcohol taste, but, since there’s only 1% volume, it wasn’t at all noticeable.

In fact, this cider is very sweet with a subtle apple flavour, so much so that I could easily drink this as a refreshing beverage. I also gave some to hubby to taste and he agreed, it’s refreshing, light and easy to drink. Great if you’re trying to cut down on alcohol units or calorie consumption.

Because of its low alcohol volume this translates to a lower amount of sugar which in turn means fewer calories! The calories in this Waitrose low alcohol cider is only 34 per 100ml, so the whole bottle has 170 calories.
