Sweet Freedom Choc Shot Coconut Review

I reviewed Sweet Freedom's Original Choc Shot way back in 2013. Since then, they've created new varieties, including Choc Shot Coconut and Choc Shot Orange Spice. As regular readers may know, I love coconut, so couldn't wait to try the coconut flavour.

It wasn't an easy task actually finding it. The Coconut seems to be sold only in branches of Holland and Barrett, but the Orange Spice is sold in Tesco stores. Many months later, I finally tracked it down and grabbed the bottle before it disappeared. Was it worth it?
As per my original review for Choc Shot, my main idea for using it was for making hot chocolate drinks. I usually have one a day, and despite the fact it contains artificial sweeteners, I love my Options white hot chocolate.

It comes in the same sized squeezy bottle as the original Choc Shot (320g) and doesn't have to be stored in the fridge after opening.

Something I've noticed about this variety is that it doesn't say anywhere on the bottle that it’s Low GL. Now the original one claimed that it was low GL, yet the nutritional breakdown is virtually the same as the Coconut variety.

Checking online, I see the original version has now also removed the low GL claim. What’s that all about? Although it doesn't include ‘sugar’ in the ingredients, it is still high in sugar from the natural fruit in the ingredients. Perhaps they've found out that these sugars are raising glucose levels faster than they initially thought.

I tried some straight from a teaspoon just to get an idea of what my drink might taste like. Hmmm, it’s quite unusual. I definitely prefer it to the original Choc Shot. I can taste other flavours in there, which may or may not be coconut. If I was tasting this blind, I'm not entirely sure I'd guess coconut. But it was quite nice.

To make my hot coconut chocolate drink even more coconuty, I used my favourite KoKo Milk to make it with. After heating it in my little Aeroccino milk frother (sadly this coconut milk produces no froth whatsoever), I stirred in a teaspoon of Choc Shot.

It mixed in easily, leaving no lumps behind and produced a pale chocolate coloured drink. This is really quite nice. Just sweet enough for my sweet tooth so I didn’t need to add any more sweetness. It’s certainly more drinkable than I found the Original Choc Shot. I added another teaspoon and it did improve the depth of flavour.

I only made up a small drink to keep the calories down. One teaspoon of Choc Shot has just 13.7 calories, so it's up to you how many you add. Of course the milk you use makes a difference. The KoKo coconut milk has 27 calories per 100ml so my initial cup was made with 100ml of coconut milk and 1 teaspoon of Choc Shot giving a drink total of around 41 calories.
