To help you see at a glance how much sugar is in popular ice lollies, I've compiled a chart showing how many calories each bar has, as well as how many teaspoons of sugar per lolly. A sugar count shown in red indicates high sugar and those in orange are medium. If you hover the cursor over the brand name, you can see exactly what ingredients are in each ice lolly. You may be in for a shock!
The war against sugar is increasing with a manic like frenzy. The latest advice published by the World Health Organization (WHO), has shown that sugar intake is associated with an increase in weight and in dental caries. We’re advised that total sugar intake should be less than 10% of daily energy intake, with a conditional recommendation of no more than 5%.
This equates to no more than 12g (3 teaspoons) for children aged four to eight, and no more than five to eight teaspoons for older kids. For adults, the new recommendation is 30g or around seven teaspoons of added sugar. Sugars referred to includes white and brown refined, honey, syrups, juices and concentrates etc. but not natural sugars found in whole fruit or in milk.
The following branded ice lollies are commonly found in supermarkets in the UK. I haven’t included individual supermarket brands, but their sugar content is generally similar to the branded versions. All those shown here have less than 100 calories per bar.
