Pret a Manger Kale Crisps Review

Pret a Manger Kale CrispsUntil a couple of years ago, I hadn't heard of kale. Now it’s one of my favourite snacks. No, I’m not munching on raw kale leaves, that would be weird! (For those who do like munching on raw kale leaves, I salute you, I wish I could). Kale is a supremely healthy vegetable, but the leaves are somewhat on the bitter side.

One way of improving the taste of kale is by turning them into kale crisps. You can do this easily using a dehydrator or in a slow oven. I haven’t had any success with making my own, so I buy them ready made when I can.

My favourite Kale snack is made by Pret a Manger.

Pret’s Kale Crisps are, as they say on the front of the pack ‘crunchy and full of goodness, naturally.’ They are made from 100% natural ingredients including sunflower seeds, onions, flax seeds, sea salt and olive oil.

Admittedly, kale makes up just 45% of the content, but the added ingredients are healthy and the overall taste and texture is delicious. They won't break the diet either, as each pack has just 105 calories.

Here’s what Pret say about their Kale snack:
‘Thanks to all of its vitamins and nutrients, kale has become a firm favourite in smoothies and juices. Happily, it also makes really good crisps.

We pick the leaves, strip them off the stem and give them a good wash. Instead of baking or frying, we slow-dry them on a low heat for 16 hours (long but necessary).

This keeps them raw, so all the nutritional goodness kale is known for gets locked in. It just happens to come with a nice crunch.’

Slow drying on a low heat is really one of the best ways of preserving nutrients. This is because as soon as you expose food to heat, it starts losing valuable vitamins and minerals. And the higher the heat, the more that is lost.

They’re a great source of fibre – each bag has 4.3g (17.3g per 100g) which is high. Protein content is also good.

Pret Kale Crisps are sold in most outlets of Pret a Manger.

Nutrition information per 30 bag: 105 calories, 3.6g protein, 7.7g carbs, 2.1g sugars, 6.6g fat, 0.8g saturates, 4.3g fibre, 0.5g salt.
