So when I spotted this Selwyn’s Seaweed Sandwich snack in Holland & Barrett, with only 20 calories per pack, it had to be worth a try.
Each pack is just 6g in weight and contains four wafer thin pieces of dried seaweed. The ingredients are dried seaweed, roasted sesame, Japanese soy sauce (soy beans, wheat, salt, water), sugar and salt.
When I opened the pack, a small plastic bag fell out. It contained some sort of powder. I picked it up and examined it. Was I supposed to dip the seaweed into it or sprinkle it on top perhaps? After opening the bag, I tipped a bit onto the paper and sniffed it.
Hmmm, it was a bit strange. So I looked closely at the packet and only then did I spot the small warning note at the bottom of the bag:
This bag contains a bag of desiccant. Do not eat and keep it out of reach of children.
So I felt pretty dumb, but hey, I’ve never had this type of snack before. I’m just glad I didn’t give it to the kids first. The desiccant is placed in with the seaweed to absorb any moisture, ensuring the seaweed stays nice and crispy.
As for the taste, it’s unusual at first. After a few bites I became accustomed to the flavour and quite enjoyed it. Each piece is very light with a rice paper like consistency. The sesame and soy gives it a nice spicy flavour too.
It takes a surprising amount of time to nibble through as long as you don’t eat all the layers together. It’s also reasonably filling. For just 20 calories, this snack is ideal for anyone trying to lose weight and looking for a lower calorie, fat free snack.
Other flavours include Original with 10 calories and Hot’n Spicy, also with 10 calories.
For more information about how Welsh seafood company, Selwyn’s, came around to turning seaweed into a snack, and for more nutritional information, here’s the link to their website.
I found this in a branch of Holland & Barratt but it’s also available on Amazon.
