Rude Health Oaty Thins Review

I love the name Rude Health. Their packaging is so eye catching it’s guaranteed to get noticed on the store shelves, especially by those of us looking for healthier food products.

Since I’ve been following a low GL diet, I’ve been including more oat-based products.  My cupboard is now stocked with many varieties of oat cakes and my newly discovered Nairn’s Oat Cracker Thins. But here’s another new one to me – Oaty Thins by Rude Health are made with 50% oats and 50% spelt. Each thin has 24 calories.

Oaty Thins look just like a large a rice cake, only there’s no rice in these. They contain 50% organic wholegrain spelt - an ancient form of wheat with a nutty flavour, and 50% wholegrain oats. There’s no GL rating, but as they're only half oats I imagine they are not as low pure oat cakes. On the calorie front however, they’re great for slimmers.

Rude Health Oaty Thins have no added salt, are non GM, no artificial ‘anything’, high in fibre and use organic whole grains. The only two ingredients are oats and spelt. Fantastic, the fewer ingredients, the better!

Oaty Thins are packed in a clear wrapper which comes with a handy twisty tie so you can keep them nice and fresh. Inside each box are around 18 thins. I’m not sure exactly how many there were as I’ve eaten a few and forgot to count them first.

So what do they taste like? Well, to me, they taste uncannily like a rice cake. They have the same feel – light as a feather and almost cardboard like, same look – compressed grains which look like squashed Rice Krispies, and similar texture. Biting into them is like a rice cake too, your tongue sticks to them on the first bite then they’re quite chewy after the first few crunches.

They hold together very well and you can pile a fair amount of toppings on them. You really do need to put something on top to give them flavour, as I imagine most people would find them quite bland on their own. I know my family do.

Rude Health suggestions include topping with smoked salmon and a squeeze of lemon, hot salsa and sour cream or bare naked!

Because they’re a good size, made with half oats – they're great for the fullness factor, plus they have only 24 calories, I’d highly recommend these for a weight loss diet. They’re healthy with three green traffic lights for sugar, saturated fat and salt. Just a medium level of fat from the oats and spelt.

Purchased in a local health food store.
