Graze Snack Box Review Cracking Black Peppercorn

Graze Snack Box Cracking Black PeppercornGraze have brought out so many new snacks, that it’s rare I ever get a snack box without something new to try. This week it was Cracking Black Peppercorn Rice Crackers. These are classed as a Graze Light snack and have 105 calories per punnet.

Lake District Dairy Cooking Sauce - Garlic & Herb

This is my third review of Quark based cooking sauces. This time it’s for the Garlic & Herb variety which was used to create a take on Spaghetti Carbonara, called Quarkonara!

Because they’re made from Quark, The Lake District Dairy Co.’s cooking sauces are naturally low in fat and calories and high in protein.

Graze Snack Box Review – Carrot Cake with tea

I was happy to find another one of Graze’s Afternoon ‘Guilt Free’ High Tea cakes in my Graze snack box. This week it was a Carrot Cake with afternoon tea infusion.

Carrot cake is one of the first cakes I ever made. I couldn’t believe that a cake could be made from vegetables, let alone that it could taste so delicious. But vegetables or not, like most cakes they are high in calories.

Ryvita Thins Bites Sweet Chilli Review

Ryvita Thins are a staple in my cupboard. My favourites are the Ryvita Thins multiseed flatbreads. There are other varieties too, including the relatively new Ryvita Thins Bites.

These are small squares of flatbreads which are packed in a 155g bag, a bit like a large bag of crisps. The headline on the packs says '80 calories per serving’. But don’t be misled, as this amounts to roughly 10 Ryvita thins and not the whole bag.

Happy Kale Carob & Coconut Snack Review

I’ve been hearing so much about the wonders of Kale. Having never heard of this vegetable until a couple of years ago, suddenly it’s everywhere. According to WHFoods.com, this cruciferous vegetable is one of the healthiest vegetables around.

The thing is, dark green veg are usually quite bitter to eat, so aren’t to everybody’s taste. I’m including it in my diet by using it regularly in my NutriBullet Nutriblast shakes. This at least helps disguise its natural taste. But another popular use for kale lately is to turn them into Kale Crisps.

No-No Houmous Flatbreads review

No No Houmous flatbreadsFirst off, this has nothing to do with that annoying advert, you know the one (No No, pain free hair removal)! In fact, this is a review for a brand of flatbreads I recently found, and they come in some very interesting flavours.

These flatbreads are houmous flavoured. Since my favourite dip for flatbreads happens to be houmous, I was intrigued to see how houmous-like these flatbreads would be. Most importantly, they have only 21 calories each!

Mini Naan Bread Be Good to yourself Review

Naan breads are rarely waistline friendly, with many racking up over 400 calories for just one. There can’t be many of us who can afford to splash out on that many calories without gaining weight.

If you don’t want to give up your naan bread, you could always tear it in half and share it!

Alternatively, you could have a whole one for yourself by choosing a smaller, lower fat version such as Sainsbury’s Be Good to Yourself Plain Mini Naans. These have just 120 calories each.

Graze Box Snack Review – Coconut Crumble Cake

I have recently decided to change my Nibblebox to a Graze Lightbox, so now all my snacks will be under 150 calories. It may have narrowed down my choices a bit, but there are still many tempting and delicious offerings available.

This week’s new surprise was the Coconut Crumble Cake with a mango, passionfruit and lime coulis on the side. And the calories? A mere 115.

Itsu Crispy Seaweed Thins Review

After discovering the seaweed snack ‘Selwyn’s Seaweed Sandwich’ reviewed here, I wondered whether there were any more out there. My search didn’t take long and the first one I found is made by Itsu. I love Itsu Japanese restaurants and there’s always plenty to choose from when looking for lower calorie options.

Itsu’s seaweed snack is called ‘Crispy Seaweed Thins (the sensational new snack)’. They’re sold in multi packs of three x 5g, and each snack has a mere 24 calories!

Nairn's Gluten Free Oatcakes Review

When it comes to supermarket shopping, life should be a little easier for those looking for gluten free foods. This is because there are now increasing numbers of gluten free products appearing in the major stores to cater for increasing demand.

Nairn’s is one company who have added their own range of Gluten free oatcakes.

Lake District Dairy Cooking Sauce Review: Tikka

lake district dairy quark tikka cooking sauceThis is the second review of The Lake District Dairy Co.’s new Quark based cooking sauces.

This next review is for the Tikka cooking sauce. It’s described as ‘one of the nation’s favourties – a beautiful bend of herbs and spices for perfect curry dishes with minimal fuss’.

Weight Watchers Apple & Cinnamon Cookies Review

Weight Watchers apple and cinnamon cookiesBrowsing around Poundland recently, I noticed an Apple & Cinnamon variety of cookies from Weight Watchers. Since apple & cinnamon is one of my favourite combinations, I decided to buy them.

Boxes contain eight individually wrapped packs of two cookies, so there are 16 in total. Each pack of two has 84 calories (2 Propoints), or 42 calories for one cookie (1 Propoint).

Kirsty's Healthy Ready Meals Review

The terms 'ready meal' and 'healthy' don't often share sentence space together. But after much slating by consumer watchdogs and the like, supermarkets are now offering healthier ranges of own-brand ready meals.

It's not only supermarkets. Entrepreneurial individuals such as Kirsty's are using this gap in the market to show us that it is possible to make a healthy ready meal.

Kirsty is a lady who, back in 2010, won investment backing from two of the Dragons from the Dragon’s Den. She now has a new range of five healthy ready meals.

Coca Cola Life with Stevia Review

Coca Cola Life can with steviaI’d heard some time ago about the release of Coca-Cola with stevia, however it was only last week I actually saw them on sale. It’s easy to recognise as it comes in a green can.

The new Coke is called ‘Coca-Cola Life’ and is described as ‘a sparkling soft drink with vegetable extracts and sugar and sweetener’. It has 33% fewer calories than the full sugared variety.

I’m not a fizzy drink consumer, but my son and his friends love the stuff. So I decided to buy a few to see what they thought. And of course, I had a small taste myself.

Coconut Water Calories, Nutrition and Ingredients

If you're on the hunt for coconut water, you won't have to look far. Its growing popularity has led to at least 35 different brands being sold in cartons and bottles around the country.

Most coconut water is just that, the juice from the inside of a coconut. But some are made from concentrate while others have added ingredients.

To help you compare different coconut water brands, here is a selection (56 and counting as at March 2017) which can be found in health stores, supermarkets and smaller retail outlets in the UK.

Lake District Dairy Quark Review and Recipe

Lake District Dairy Quark varietiesI recently received three tubs of Quark soft cheese, courtesy of the Lake District Dairy Co. Quark is a type of soft cheese that really deserves more attention than it currently gets.

Quark soft cheese is extremely versatile and can be used in place of cream cheese or fromage frais in sweet or savoury recipes. Quark provides a good source of protein, and because it’s low in calories and fat, it’s a fantastic choice for slimmers.

Kingsmill Bagel Thins - Review

Kingsmill Bagel Thins whiteIf you’re looking for easy ways of cutting calories, consider buying mini versions of your favourite foods. Alternatively, look out for ‘Thins’. This is another trick manufacturers are using to help us downsize our portions and calorie intake, while still enjoying the food we like.

Recently the New York Bakery introduced Mini Bagels (see review) and now Kingsmill have introduced their ‘Bagel Thins’. Each bagel has 122 calories compared with 231 calories for the regular sized bagel.

Experiences of Using a NutriBullet

Following on from my earlier post - 'Experiences of Buying a NutriBullet', here's an update on what it's like to use.

I'm using the NutriBullet 600 which has a 600W motor capable of blitzing fruit and vegetables into smithereens in a matter of seconds.  I’ve had my NutriBullet in action for a couple of months now, and I’ve been experimenting with all sorts of fruity, veggie combinations.

Some are a success, others, not so much.

Danone Shape Chocolate & Hazelnut Dessert Review

I last wrote a brief review about the arrival of Shape Delights low calorie desserts way back in March 2011. Since then, the vanilla flavour seems to have fallen by the wayside, and the name ‘Delights’ has been dropped. Now they're simply called - desserts.

If you're a Nutella fan, you might be interested in Shape's new variety to the dessert range called Chocolate & Hazelnut dessert. Pots have 109 calories each.

Experiences of Buying a NutriBullet - Review

I am the proud owner of NutriBullet 600. I did my research, read the reviews, compared it with various blenders, even the mighty (expensive) Vitamix. But the NutriBullet won, its advertising winning me over, along with the enthusiastic recommendations from fellow nutritionists already using it.

I’m hoping this won't be short lived phase, with another expensive gadget joining my collection of defunct appliances. [Update: See also Experiences of Using a NutriBullet]

Graze Breakfast Box Granola Review

Graze breakfast snack boxSince discovering Graze nearly three years ago (I can’t believe it’s been that long), they've vastly expanded their range of snacks.

Now Graze have branched out into the breakfast section and developed a range of twenty (at the time of writing) breakfast cereals including granola and porridge varieties.

I signed up for one and received my first breakfast snack box containing four different granolas.

Crispy Sesame Seaweed Sandwich Snack Review

Crispy seaweed is popular in Japanese restaurants, but it’s not something I've ever been tempted to eat. However, when wrapped around a piece of sushi, it's really quite inoffensive, in that I can't really taste it!

So when I spotted this Selwyn’s Seaweed Sandwich snack in Holland & Barrett, with only 20 calories per pack, it had to be worth a try.

Funny Feet Strawberry Ice Cream Lollies Review

Funny Feet are strawberry flavoured ice cream lollies which apparently were very popular in the 80’s. They were phased out of production in the 1990s and all but forgotten about.

But thanks to a Facebook campaign by The Grocer magazine, asking for the brands people most wanted to see brought back, Funny Feet won hands down (groan)!

So, for all those with fond memories of Funny Feet, they can now be found once more in the shops, in the same yellow box from the 1980s. And good news for calorie counters, Funny Feet have 70 calories each.

Graze Snack Box Review – Lemon Cake and Cup of Tea

Graze are expanding their product lines in all sorts of directions, one of which is their ‘Afternoon Tea’ range. This line includes a slice of cake together with a tea bag infusion.

At the time of writing the selection includes: Banana Cake (55 calories), Carrot Cake (82 calories), Lemon and Poppy Cake (81 calories) or Love Cake: limited edition (106 calories).

I’d been hoping for one of these cakes to show up in a Graze box soon, and this week, there it was. The Lemon and Poppy Cake with an afternoon infusion.

Claudi & Fin Greek Style Frozen Yoghurt Lollies Review

Sales of frozen yogurt are at an all time high. According to MySupermarket.com, frozen yogurt sales are going up, while ice cream sales are declining. One reason appears to be that consumers see yogurt as a healthier, lower fat alternative to ice cream.

This isn’t necessarily always the case, as many yogurt desserts can have as much or even more sugar than ice cream. For this reason I've never been too interested in frozen yogurts. However, after reading about new ‘healthy’ Greek-style yogurt ice lollies called Claudi & Fin with only 52 or 56 calories each, I had to try them out.

What Ingredients are in Your Porridge Oats?

It should be obvious! Porridge contains oats and that's that! Not any more it's not. These days we're more likely to find porridge oats with any number of ingredients besides plain old oats.

With the popularity of porridge showing no signs of abating, the choices available are growing almost daily.

Brands are competing with each other, offering a multitude of flavours and choices of packaging. But what about those ingredients? Do you consider what's gone into your porridge to make it so tasty? Read on to see what's in your favourite porridge oats.

Tesco Healthy Living Popcorn Review

Tesco have changed the name of their ‘healthier’ range of products from ‘Tesco Light Choices’ to ‘Tesco Healthy Living’. One of the new products in this line is their lower calorie popcorn which is available in two slightly unusual varieties (for popcorn).

There’s the Tesco Healthy Living Red Thai Curry Popcorn with 85 calories a pack and Tesco Healthy Living Sour Cream & Back Pepper Popcorn with 88 calories. If you’re following Weight Watchers, a whole bag has 2 ProPoints.

Skinny Cow Mini Iced Lollies Quick Review

I’m always happy to find a mini version of food, mainly to save on calories. However, I was surprised to find a mini version of these Nestle Skinny Cow Caramel Temptation Iced Lolly sticks as the regular version only have 93 calories each!

Still, if you’re after something even smaller, well, these mini iced caramel lollies are really quite cute. They taste just the same as the regular sized ones (see review) and each 60ml lolly has 74 calories.

Graze Snack Box Review Smoky BBQ Corn

BBQ Jumbo Corn & Cashews has joined the growing list of my favourite Graze snacks. At 161 calories per punnet, it’s a bit higher than I’d prefer for a one off snack, but it’s easy enough to make them last longer.

Jumbo corn is a new eating experience for me. I wasn’t sure what they were exactly. They’re not like popcorn or sweetcorn. They look more like a corn kernel than popcorn, with a crunchy chickpea texture, only much more tasty.

Belvita Breakfast Biscuits Varieties for 2014

The popularity of breakfast biscuits is showing no signs of abating. Since Belvita arrived on the scene back in 2010, they’ve been joined on the supermarket shelves by numerous competitors. However, it’s still Belvita leading the way with more varieties than ever before.

Here’s the latest round up of Belvita Breakfast Biscuits, calories and varieties, for 2014 in the UK.

Weight Watchers Wheat & Rice Flakes Cereal Review

I’m well acquainted with the breakfast cereals aisles in most of the main supermarkets, so I couldn't help but notice this new arrival from Weight Watchers.

There are two varieties: Love Fibre Wheat & Rice flakes and Love Fibre flakes with Raisins, Sultanas and Apples. As far as I’m aware, this is the first breakfast cereal from Weight Watchers, at least in the UK.

Castus Be Fruity Fig Fruit Bar Review

For the past year or so, rather just concentrating on finding the lowest calorie products, I’ve been more interested in finding ‘healthier’ snacks which also happen to be lower in calories.

With this in mind, I recently purchased another variety of the all-natural Castus bar. This one is called the Be Fruity with Fig fruit bar. It’s 100% natural with no added sugar and one bar = 1 portion of fruit. And the great news is it has only 70 calories.

Mini Bagels by New York Bakery - Review

New York Bakery Mini Plain BagelsI can’t resist buying mini versions of food. Not only do they have fewer calories, they're just so cute! Naturally, when I spotted these mini bagels from the New York Bakery, I had to buy some.

There are three varieties to choose from: Wholemeal & Wheat, Plain or Cinnamon & Raisin.

I was pleased to see the inclusion of a wholemeal variety, but they all looked so tempting, I ended up buying one of each.

Weetabix Banana Review

Weetabix banana pack 24sI often buy Weetabix for my children. However, I generally stick with the plain varieties and NOT the chocolate ones. I can’t contemplate giving them chocolate for breakfast.

But, I did deviate this week from my usual purchase when I saw a new variety called ‘Weetabix Banana’.

Galaxy Light Style Instant Hot Chocolate Review

There is an explosion of new hot chocolate drinks on the supermarket shelves. They’re coming from all the main players including Cadbury, Options and Galaxy. The problem is, they’re all so high in sugar which of course means calories.

Even Options, well known for their wide and delicious range of 40 calorie hot drinks, has decided to join the high cal, high sugar brigade with their luxurious range. It seems that the whole ‘cutting down on sugar’ idea just isn't catching on to some manufacturers!

Hermesetas Stevia Sweet Sweetener Review

Pret a Manger Soup Review & Calorie Comparison

Pret a Manger soup potPopping out for a bite to eat recently, I stopped into a branch of Pret a Manger. Since it was icy cold outside, my fingers needed some warming up and what could be better than a pot of soup?

I hadn’t tried any of the Pret soup range before and once I saw the varieties available, I couldn't resist buying one.

Kingsmill Great White High Fibre Bread Review

Kingsmill great white high fibre breadMost of us by now are probably aware of the benefits of eating whole grains. One of the easiest ways to do this is swapping from white bread to wholemeal. However, the taste is very different and many people prefer sticking to their familiar white loaves.

There is a halfway house solution provided by Kingsmill’s 50/50 loaves, Warburtons Half & Half and Hovis’ Best of Both. These look very much like white bread and taste quite similar, but have much more fibre. They do provide a good compromise, but now there’s a new variety on the shelves called Kingsmill Great White. This deliciously soft white bread has as much fibre as wholemeal and tastes just like white bread.

Propercorn Popcorn Sour Cream, Sweet & Salty Review

Proper Corn popcorn packetsA trip to the cinema wouldn't be complete without the obligatory popcorn to snack on. But once you know the average box of cinema popcorn contains over 500 calories, it can lose it's appeal, especially if you're watching your weight.

Of course, if you really can't do without popcorn while engrossed in a great film, you can always bring your own (though you may have to sneak it in, in some cinemas!)

Porridge Oats On The Go - Calories, Sugar & Fat Info

Greggs Porridge apple sultana cinnamonHow do you like your porridge in the morning? Cooked traditionally in a pan and simmered for several minutes. Or do you prefer the quick and easy option of popping an instant pot or packet into the microwave for a couple of minutes? And what if you don’t have time to even do that? No problem.

These days most popular coffee shop chains like Starbucks, Costa Coffee and Caffe Nero sell ready to eat porridge. You can eat it in-store or take it away on your way to work or wherever you’re heading off to.

New Easy Pouring Carton for Alpro Soya Light

Alpro have a new packaging design for their ambient long life Soya Light and I must say it's a huge improvement. The carton shape is now in line with their chilled drinks (see photo below) and the top of the carton has a gentle downward slope with a much larger screw type lid. It's so much easier to open and hold, and it pours out perfectly.

Alpro Soya Drink Simply Mild Review

Alpro Soya Simply MildWhen I first saw this new Alpro Soya Simply Mild, I assumed it was new packaging with a new name for their Original chilled soya drink. However, on closer examination of the ingredients and nutrition information, I realised they are indeed different.

Alpro Soya Simply Mild seems to be targeted at those who aren’t crazy about the soya taste, which is inevitable when drinking soya milk! Although there is sugar in the ingredients, it has only 35 calories per 100ml.

20 Marks & Spencer Soups - Update 2014

Ready to eat pots of soup are as popular as ever with most supermarkets selling a wide range of own brand soups alongside their competitors. Marks and Spencer must have one of the greatest varieties with no less than 20 different flavours to choose from.

Since 2013, M&S have changed their soup packaging from a tall cylindrical shape to a slightly more squat, oval shape. Each pot still holds 600g. They’ve also lost one or two varieties and introduced new ones.

Here is the 2014 update for M&S ready to eat soup pots.
