Marks & Spencer Fat Free Fruity Dressings – Review

M&S Fat free dressingsMarks & Spencer have brought out two new fat free salad dressings which are sold in miniature sized 100ml bottles.

Currently the two varieties are Fat Free & Fruity Pomegranate & Apple Dressing and Fat Free & Fruity White Balsamic & Grape dressing. The bottles have a spray pump top and each spray has only 1 calorie.

Most of are likely to liven up our salads with some sort of dressing and these days the choice is enormous. However, if you choose an oil based dressing such as salad cream or mayonnaise, you could make your salad into a highly calorific meal. Of course there are lower calorie and fat reduced varieties such as this one from from Heinz.

Alternatively, you could try one of these dressings from M&S which are both made with white wine vinegar with added fruit juice.

I purchased a bottle of each. To test them out, I sprayed each of them in turn over a plate of plain iceberg lettuce. It takes a few pumps of the top before the dressing emerges as a fine spray.

While the 'less than 1 calorie per spray' sign is an attention grabber, in all honesty, you need much more than this to taste anything at all. There is a noticeable smell of vinegar, but I couldn’t really smell the fruit. Out of the two, the Pomegranate & Apple definitely had more flavour but this was after at least 10 sprays.

But it's an easy way to keep track of your calories. Ten sprays equals 10 calories, easy peasy.

The size of the bottles, just 100ml, initially makes them an attractive purchase, especially if you don't use it that often. However, with a shelf life of just one week, you'll need to get through the entire contents within that time before it's out of date.

Personally, if I'm just eating a simple salad, I need something with a bit more zing, such as sweet chilli sauce. But if vinegar based dressings are your thing, then these mini dressings from Marks & Spencer could be worth a try.

Found in the refrigerated section in M&S food stores.
