Chicken with Madeira Wine & Porcini Mushrooms

Chicken with Madeira Wine & Porcini Mushrooms is a freezable ready meal from the Waitrose LOVE Life you count range.

This is the kind of meal that you might expect to order in a restaurant rather than something you'd regularly cook up at home. The great thing about the Love Life You count range is that the meals are perfectly nutritionally balanced while keeping the calories down.

Chicken with Madeira Wine & Porcini Mushrooms is low in fat and saturates and has just 318 calories.

Sainsbury's Reduced Fat Soft Cheese

Cream cheese can be used in all sorts of ways, from spreading onto bagels to making a cheesecake. But delicious though it is, cream cheese is generally high in fat and saturates, which means lots of calories.

That is unless you choose wisely and opt for a reduced fat version - like this reduced fat soft cream cheese from the Sainsbury’s Be Good to Yourself range.

Eat Water Low Calorie Slim Noodles, Pasta, Rice Review

Some years ago a friend visiting the U.S. told me they had food with zero calories. I was skeptical to say the least. Everything has calories except water, right? But, my friend was insistent, these foods did exist.

To my amazement, we now have such zero calorie foods here. Well, it's not quite zero calories, but near enough. Slim Pasta, Slim Noodles, Slim Spaghetti and Slim Rice are the ultimate dieters friend. They look similar to the real thing but they’re made from a vegetable fibre called Moyu (Konjac), which is commonly eaten in Asia.

They can help you lose weight because they're low calorie, fat free and sugar free. Plus they're suitable for coeliacs (celiacs), diabetics and those with a gluten intolerance.

Reduced Fat French Butter Croissants - Waitrose

Who doesn’t love croissants? That delicious soft, melting texture of warm buttery pastry is like a taste of heaven. But all those calories! The average plain croissant has over 200 calories and more than 10g of fat. Anyone watching their weight would be best advised to steer well clear of such a treat.

Fortunately, not all croissants are quite so sinful. Waitrose LOVE lifeyou count... have a reduced fat version of French butter croissants which taste every bit as delicious as the full fat variety.

How Healthy Are Your Weetabix?

UPDATE 2018: As this post is now a few years old, I've updated the Weetabix range in my new post.

Weetabix Range, Nutrition, Calories and Ingredients.

Weetabix are one of the most popular breakfast cereals which many of us have been enjoying for years.

Made from whole wheat, Weetabix are high in fibre and low in fat, sugar and salt. Plus, when eaten with milk, they have a low Glycaemic Index (GI) level, providing slow release energy throughout the morning.

But with many more Weetabix varieties to choose from these days, are all Weetabix breakfast cereals still healthy?

Tesco Light Choices Instant Hot Chocolate Review

Tesco have at last brought out their own brand of  lower calorie, lower fat instant hot chocolate. Light Choices Instant Hot Chocolate contains 70% less fat than Tesco Standard Instant Hot Chocolate.

It’s described as an ‘Instant hot chocolate drink with sugar and sweeteners’.

As someone who drinks low calorie hot drinks on a daily basis, I’m always keen to try out any new varieties on the market. Unfortunately, some of them turn out to be a poor compromise of quality and taste for calories. Would Tesco’s own brand be any different?

Marks & Spencer Guilt Free Snacking Updates

Marks & Spencer's Guilt Free Snacking range has been around for nearly a year now, so it's to be expected that the snacks will be updated from time to time. Having a look around the sweet treats area recently, I noticed a few new additions.

Eating More Fibre Equals Even More Calories

If you enjoy eating a high fibre diet as part of your calorie counted slimming plan, you may be finding it more difficult to lose weight than expected.

Generally, eating a diet high in fibre is encouraged amongst those wishing to lose weight.

Fibre is helpful with weight loss as it’s filling and takes longer to chew and digest. Plus it’s long been believed that much of the fibre content of food which passes through us undigested, contains little to no calories.

But it seems we’ve all been misled.

Pineapple Cottage Cheese Be Good to Yourself

I have a strange addiction to pineapple cottage cheese and get through at least half a pot per day.  However, I don’t see this as a bad thing. After all, cottage cheese is a good source of calcium and is relatively low in fat and calories compared to other cheeses.

Anyway, this has led me to tasting various different brands of pineapple cottage cheese over the years and I have a firm favourite made by M&S. However, it’s so often out of stock I have to get my supplies elsewhere. Here’s my verdict on Sainsbury’s Be Good To Yourself Pineapple Cottage Cheese.

Morrisons Nu Me Reduced Fat Pork Sausages

My family love eating a full English cooked breakfast and needless to say, I ensure it’s as low in fat and calories as possible. One of the most essential ingredients of a cooked breakfast is the sausage. However, many sausages are full of unhealthy saturated fat, making that breakfast exceedingly unhealthy.

Fortunately, there are many reduced fat sausages in the supermarkets and I've bought many brands over the years. Last week we tried out a 50% reduced fat sausage from the Morrisons Nu Me range. Each sausage has 62 calories.

Sweet Chilli Chicken Noodles Tesco Light Choices

I purchased this ready meal as part of a money saving deal. And, although I’m not a great noodle fan, my kids adore them. I probably serve up ready meals once or twice a week but try to make sure they’re as healthy as possible.

Tesco Light Choices ready meals have lower calories, fat or sugar than standard versions and are either less than 3% fat or 30% less fat than a comparable product. The Sweet Chilli Chicken Noodles ready meal says it’s an improved recipe with 80% less fat than a typical Chinese ready meal and it has 355 calories.

Healthy Straight Cut Chips - Sainsbury

Chips have an unhealthy reputation. Fried in oil and dripping with saturated fat, they turn the humble potato into a cholesterol raising time bomb.

Of course, not all chips are as unhealthy as I’ve just described. It all depends on how you cook them. In fact, there are some chips that are healthy enough to include in a weight loss and low fat diet.
