Nairns Mini Oatcakes Review

Since I've been following a low GL way of eating, I've been buying more oatcakes because of their low GL (glycemic load). This means they don't cause much of a rise in blood sugar levels. One of my favourite brands are Nairns who have a great range of oatcakes. This includes their Oaty Bakes and Oat Biscuits which I've reviewed already. Nairns Mini Oatcakes are also great for calorie counters as each one has just 19 calories.

Graze Box Snack Review – Boston Baguettes

Graze Snack Box Boston BaguettesBoston Baguettes is one of Graze’s gorgeous selection of snacks with dips. Out of the seven I’ve already been sent, there isn’t one I have enjoyed so far.

Boston Baguettes consists of a small punnet of tomato breadsticks with a separate section of bbq relish. For me, this is the perfect snack. Miniature sized, crunchy baguettes with a delicious dip all for just 85 calories.

M&S 5 Grain & 3 Seed Porridge Review

Porridge is growing in popularity at a huge rate. This should be fantastic news because it’s such a healthy food. It’s filling, nutritious, helps lower cholesterol and importantly for winter – it’s warming.

Possibly one of the best reasons for eating porridge is its naturally low sugar levels – less than a quarter teaspoon per 100g of uncooked oats! But not all porridges are equal. Many of the flavoured varieties on sale these days contain excessive amounts of sugar which only serves to decrease their healthiness.

If you are looking for a bit more from your porridge, you could try some of those which have healthier ingredients in them – like The Food Doctor nuts & seeds. That is my favourite porridge right now – BUT I’ve found another which is very similar. It’s from Marks & Spencer called 5 Grain & 3 Seed Porridge. It’s super healthy, tasty, incredibly filling and VERY low in sugar.

Lizi’s Granola Low GL Tasty Cereals Review

Granola is a popular breakfast cereal in the US which is catching on fast over here. Well known brands are producing their own versions of this oat-based cereal, but they come at a high price – calories and sugar!

Lizi's Granola cereal range is a bit different. They're not only lower in sugar than many other granolas, they've been scientifically tested so they can be called a low GL product. And even better, they're totally delicious.

Metcalfe's Skinny Topcorn (Popcorn) Review

Brand marketers know that when they put the word 'SKINNY' on their product, they're bound to get a lot of interest from passing shoppers. And without a doubt, I'm one of them. Nevertheless, I’m always sceptical until I’ve read the nitty gritty nutrition details as it's often the case that they’re not really skinny at all!

So it was when I spotted this popcorn snack by Metcalfe’s while I was doing an online Ocado shop. There were two varieties available: Sea Salt or Sweet ‘n’ Salt. Having a sweet tooth, I opted for the Sweet ‘n’ Salt with 115 calories per bag.

Balancing Exercise & Diet for Weight Loss

(Guest Post)
With dozens of new exercise crazes hitting the storefront gym every day (Zoomba, anyone?), it’s easy to get overly focused on exercise as THE way to lose weight. Upping the calories you burn will certainly do the trick, but are enough calories and the right calories entering the body to begin with? Balancing both intake and expenditure can yield safe and satisfying results, according to nutritionists and MDs alike. Not eating healthy could have a detrimental effect, though, if you’re working out more and still eating poorly.

Nairns Oat Cracker Thins Review

Nairn's Oat Cracker Thins packetI’m a big fan of Nairn’s and have tried many of their oat snacks. This includes their tasty sweet oat biscuits which are all under 45 calories and Oaty Bakes – individual oat snacks, plus of course, their range of oat cakes. But last week I spotted a product by Nairn’s which I hadn’t seen before.

Nairn’s Oat Cracker Thins are the first oat-based savoury snack I’ve seen in cracker form. I don’t know if they’re new or not, but they sounded nice, and with 32 calories each, I had to buy a box.

Vive Soy Milk Varieties and Review

Vive Soy Drinks Light and Unsweetened CartonsThis review is for a new brand (in the UK at least) of soya milk. While I'm more than happy with the Alpro Soya Light I drink on a daily basis, I couldn’t resist purchasing a couple of these soy drinks called Vive Soy.

I spotted them while doing an Ocado online shop as they were on a special offer and I hadn't seen these before. They were also noticeable as they had a wide variety of flavours and a ‘light’ version.

Chocolate Bar Arrivals for Autumn 2013

As it's coming up to Christmas again, there is the usual onslaught of new chocolate bars appearing on confectionery shelves everywhere. Over the past few weeks I've come across a new bar from Mars, two from Cadbury's and one from Kinder.

Rather than write a single post for each new chocolate bar I've found, I've decided to lump them together in groups to save time. I'll also be adding them to my Calories in Popular Chocolate bars post.

Patient.Co.Uk - MyHealth Tool Review

The Internet is awash with self-help health websites. Many of them are very useful, while others should be labelled with a health warning! But the Internet is often a first port of call for many of us when searching for information.

However, when it comes to our health, it's simply not worth taking a risk from dubious online sources. If you’re concerned about your health or just want to know how you can go about improving your lifestyle, you can find a wealth of information from patient.co.uk.

Weight Watchers Oat & Wheat Crackers Review

Weight Watchers Oat & Wheat Crackers BoxI’ve been trying to cut down on the amount of wheat based products we eat in my family. This isn’t easy as wheat, in some form or another seems to be a part of most meals. As a halfway compromise, I picked up a box of Weight Watchers Oat & Wheat crackers.

They’re low in calories, fat and sugar and are described as Light and crispy with oats and wheat. One single cracker has only 18.5 calories.

Graze Box Snack Review – Coffee & Walnut Cake

Graze Box Coffee and Walnut cake, one of my all time favourites. However, I can’t even remember the last time I ate a real slice of this cake. It's just not something I'd choose as a snack any more.

But actually, Graze's coffee and walnut cake isn’t a cake at all. This snack is great if you're trying to get healthy and feel you’re missing out on treats. With a clever combination of ingredients, Graze manage to conjure up a similar taste sensation to coffee & walnut cake, albeit in a healthier way.

Snack a Jacks Packs for Under 100 Calories

Snack a Jacks savoury Rice Cakes and Crunchy Curls are great tasting snacks with around 7% fat. They’re available in individual sized packs or multipacks. Snack a Jacks are ideal for helping with weight control as packs typically contain around 110 calories.

But, if you’re looking to shave a few more calories off your daily intake, you’ll find the bags inside the multipacks bags have fewer calories. True, the packs are smaller, but you’d barely notice the absence of two or three rice cakes or crunchy curls.

Sweet Freedom Choc Shot Review

While browsing the ‘Sweet Freedom’ website a few weeks ago (a site I hadn’t visited before), a new product instantly caught my attention. It was called Choc Shot and was due to be released into the supermarkets in a few weeks. What perfect timing.

While the new Choc Shot sounded like an ideal solution to my kids ‘Nutella’ addiction, it also ticked the right boxes for fitting in with my new low GL way of eating. Yep, this product has a low glycemic load (foods with a low GL rating encourage the body to burn fat) AND each teaspoon has just 14 calories or 13.7 to be exact!

The Fruit Factory Strawberry Yoghurt Fruit Bar Review

Fruit factory strawberry yogurt barThe Fruit Factory make a range of snacks with a high fruit content. They’re aimed at the kids lunch box and snacking sector, but that doesn’t mean they can’t be eaten by grown ups too, especially those who are watching their weight.

I hadn’t seen any bar type snacks from the Fruit Factory, so when I came across these Strawberry & Yogurt Fruit Bars I thought they I’d see what they were like. They’re made with 80% fruit, with no artificial colours or flavours. Each bar counts as one portion of fruit – contributing to one of the recommended minimum of 5-a-day. And the calories? Just 65 per 20g bar.

Smoothies – Are they really a health risk?

Smoothies have been in the news again recently, and not in a good way. Not so long ago they were hailed as a healthy drink choice. But now they’re being lambasted as a ‘health risk’, with US scientists declaring they're as bad for our teeth as a full 'fat' can of Coke!

Nakd Strawberry Crunch Wholefood Bars Review

Nakd Strawberry crunch barsNakd have added another variety to their range of wholefood snack bars called Nakd Strawberry Crunch. These Fruit, Crunchies & Nut Wholefood bars are ‘Gleefully Made in Britain’. They're described as 'filling & yummy; no added sugar; wheat, dairy & gluten free’ and they contain 18% protein.

Since I’ve been looking for healthier foods which are also lower in calories, Nakd bars have become a regular staple in my food cupboard. I tend to stick with the Banana Bread, Coco Loco, Berry Cheeky and Apple Pie bars as they all have around 100 calories each.

Muller Light Low Calorie Desserts Review

Muller Light dessertsMuller Light have a new dessert range aimed at those looking for a sweet treat without the hefty calorie tag. The flavours are: Mischievous Milk Chocolate, Frivolous Fudge Dessert and Wickedly White Chocolate Dessert.

I spotted these about 10 weeks ago, all on sale at £1 each. As the calories were low I decided to see what they were like. Not able to choose between the flavours, I bought one of each. All three varieties are sold as a four pack – 4 x 100g pots with calories varying from 88 to 99 per pot.

Garbanzo Roasted Chickpeas Low Calorie Snack Review

Garbanzo Dry Roasted ChickpeasIf you’re the type of person who frequently finds themselves standing in front of an open fridge or cupboard door, searching for something to nibble on, even if you’re not particularly hungry, then it’s possible you’re a mindless eater. And mindless eaters can have a tendency to gain weight.

Alternatively, if you’re someone who likes snacking between meals but ends up eating too many calories overall, then it’s worthwhile looking for lower calorie, satisfying snacks that won’t be finished in a couple of bites.

I recently discovered these little wonder snacks which are super healthy. They’re high in fibre, so they’re filling and help you stay fuller longer, plus they’re a good source of protein, low in fat, sugar and salt with just 88 calories per pack.

Graze Box Review - Savoury Popcorn Review

Graze black pepper pop cornAt the end of last year, Graze introduced a range of popping corn – sweet, salted and black pepper. They send you a bag of un-popped corn kernels which just have to be cooked in the microwave.

I received the Slightly Sweet popping corn last year (reviewed here). But it wasn’t until the last couple of months that I got to sample the other two varieties which I’ll review together.

Space Raiders Pickled Onion Baked Snacks

Space Raiders are corn based, baked snacks which come in one flavour – pickled onion. They’re available in multi-bags of 10 in Poundland and have only 64 calories per pack.

I have to say, these aren’t the sort of snack I’d gravitate towards in the supermarket. In fact, the only way I found out about them was when an empty packet appeared in my daughter's lunch box one day.

LIVLIFE Seriously Seeded Low Carb Bread Review

LivLife Low Carbohydrate BreadI read about this LIVLIFE bread in a daily paper last week and was initially quite skeptical. The newspaper blurb described it as a low-carb loaf which could help dieters lose weight.

I imagined it as a typical ‘slimming’ bread. You know the sort, full of air and light as a feather, but I read on.

Livlife bread is made with wholemeal flour and soya flour which helps lower the carbs while increasing the protein.

It’s also crammed with seeds which adds more protein as well as fibre and essential fatty acids. And despite all those seeds, the calorie count for each slice is only 68 calories, compared to the average slice of seeded bread which has around 110 calories.

M&S Count on Us Smokey Cajun Chicken Jambalaya

Many times I’ve tried cooking Jambalaya, but somehow it always seems to end up like either a risotto or a paella. So when I saw this Smokey Cajun Chicken Jambalaya in Marks & Spencer, I thought it might be worth seeing what the real thing should taste like.

Ever conscious of the calorie content, I was pleased see that the M&S Count on us… version of Jambalaya has only 360 calories for a 400g meal. It’s also low in fat.

Linwoods Mini variety Healthy Super Food Packs

Linwoods mini superfood variety box
Mini Variety Box
Whenever I get the time, I love having a browse around health food shops. They have so many interesting and unusual products that you rarely see in the large supermarkets.

I’m often looking for healthier type snacks to eat, both for myself and my kids. Getting them to eat healthily is a struggle, so I have been known to resort to ‘sneaky’ methods of increasing their vitamin and mineral content.

25 Top Excuses For Giving Up the Diet

Go to work on an egg, the famous slogan from the 1950’s, was once advertised as the best way to start the working day.

We may have changed our breakfast habits over the ensuing years, but our attitudes towards dieting seem remarkably familiar.

'I was bored', 'It was my birthday' and 'Life’s too short' are among some of the usual excuses trotted out by fed up slimmers.

Danone Activia Fat Free Rhubarb Yogurt Review

Danone Activia Fat Free Rhubarb yogurtActivia have introduced a new fat free Rhubarb variety to their range of single pot yogurts.

Rhubarb isn’t one of my favourite fruits, despite their low calorie count, but for some reason, I love it in yogurt. Shape Delights do a gorgeous Rhubarb Crumble yogurt which I’ve been buying since it was first on sale.

Another yogurt always in my fridge is the fat free Raspberry yogurt by Activia which is lovely and creamy with an exquisite taste. With this in mind I was looking forward to sampling the new Activia flavour.

Waitrose Low Fat Cottage Cheese with Pineapple

Waitrose Pineapple Cottage CheeseIf you like your cottage cheese very creamy, then you might like the Essential Waitrose varieties. They’re low in fat and saturates and very mild and creamy tasting.

Since Pineapple cottage cheese is almost an addiction of mine, (and I’ve tried almost every brand I can find), their pineapple cottage cheese is one of the best.

Graze Snack Review - Salt and Vinegar Nuts

Graze Salt & Vinegar nut selection snackWhen thinking of the salt & vinegar combination, you might imagine a bag of crisps or maybe fish & chips. But Graze have taken this popular seasoning mix and applied it to one of their latest snacks - nuts.

This snack is called ‘Oven roasted Salt and Vinegar Nut Selection’ and consists of a mixture of whole almonds and peanuts.

Weight Watchers Fat Free Greek Style Fromage Frais

Weight Watchers Fat Free Coconut fromage frais and vanillaI adore coconut and always get excited if I spot a new coconut yogurt on the supermarket shelves.

Unfortunately, the feeling doesn't last long as they're always way beyond the number of calories I’m comfortable with. For some reason, they never seem to be sold in a ‘diet’ or ‘fat free’ version - probably because coconut is so high in calories.

But finally, to my amazement, here at last is a low calorie, fat free, coconut Greek Style fromage frais from Weight Watchers.

It’s 5 days before your best friend’s wedding and you look 7lbs heavier than you’d like to be. It’s just weeks before a really important interview and it would make a far better impression if you were just a little less bloated.

Blue Diamond Almond Breeze Almond Milk Sweetened

Blue Diamond Almond Breeze Almond Sweetened MilkLast year a new brand of almond milk from the US (Blue Diamond) made its entrance into the UK market. This was quite soon after Alpro introduced their Almond and Hazelnut milks, so it seems these dairy and soy alternatives are in some demand.

I was amazed to discover that their Unsweetened Almond milk contains only 14 calories per 100ml. Always keen to try out new (lower calorie) dairy alternatives, the calorie count alone was enough to persuade me to try it out (see review).

However, despite containing added sugar, Blue Diamond's sweetened Almond milk has just 24 calories 100ml. This is certainly one to consider if you prefer a sweeter milk.

Graze Box Snack Review - Lemon & Rosemary Olives

Graze have sent me a fair few olive snacks to try over the past year or so. Some of them have since disappeared such as the Greek Kalamata Olives and the green olives with chilli and garlic .

I’m not sure why this is, but Graze have introduced some new olive combinations, one of which arrived in my Graze box this week. It’s called Mixed Olives with Rosemary and Lemon and has 129 calories.

Sainsbury Torinesi Italian Baked Breadsticks Review

Sainsbury Torinesi breadsticksI was so impressed with the range of Torinesi breadsticks from Kallo, that I thought I'd see how Sainsbury’s Taste the Difference Torinesi Breadsticks compared. They caught my attention because the box looks like it contains white chocolate sticks, which somehow looked out of place among the breadsticks.

But I hadn’t seen these before, so perhaps this style of breadstick is becoming more popular. A quick glance at the nutrition label tells me each breadstick has 13 calories, which sounds good to me.

Gullon Cinnamon Crisps Spanish Biscuits

Gullon Cinnamon Crisps Biscuit BoxGullon are Spain’s leading biscuit producers and one of their factories is the largest biscuit factory in Europe. Here in the UK though, it’s rare you’ll find any of the Gullon brand in our main supermarkets.

However, venture into some of the smaller franchises such as Costcutter, and you should be able to find some of their great range of biscuits. They include high fibre, sugar free and cholesterol free biscuits, as well as other delights such as these gorgeous Cinnamon Crisps which have just 30 calories each.

Count Down Crunchy Granola Bars (Poundland)

I've had to resign myself to the fact that whenever I enter the doors of a Poundland store, I'll leave with ten times more stuff than I originally planned. More often than not, this is because I've found a good bargain on Weight Watchers foods. But on my recent visit I noticed a new brand of granola cereal bars called 'Count Down'.

With a name such as 'Count Down' it seemed likely they might be aimed at the calorie conscious market. And they were. Taking a glance at the nutrition label, it turned out each bar has 90 calories. Since that's under my 100 calorie snack limit, I picked up a pack, paid my £1 and took them home… along with all the other 'stuff' I didn't plan on buying.

How Waist Height Ratio is Better Health Guide than BMI

Women come in all shapes and sizes. But whatever shape we are, there’s usually something we don’t like about it. Many women are predisposed to gaining weight on the thighs. And unfortunately, it’s one of the most stubborn areas of fat to get rid of.

If you’re a classic ‘Pear’ shape with larger hips and thighs in comparison to the rest of your body, there is some consolation.

14 Healthy Sausages Nutrition and Calories

Good old British bangers. They're the staple of toad in the hole and sausage& mash. But they don't have a healthy reputation. However, these days where shoppers are looking for healthier choices, it is possible to find sausages which are almost approaching a 'healthy' status.

It has to be said that the tastiest, juiciest sausages are often those with the highest levels of fat. But these aren't waistline or artery friendly, so you may prefer choosing a healthier sausage. This isn't easy as the majority on sale in UK supermarkets are high in fat or saturated fat. The good news is there are some healthier sausages out there, and they taste pretty good too.

After doing some research in several supermarkets, I've produced a list of 14 sausages, none of which has a red traffic light or high (unhealthy) levels of fat, saturates, sugar and salt.

The 14 sausages shown below includes vegetarian varieties, a chicken sausage and the more common pork sausages.

Graze Box Snack Review - Veggie Sushi Plate

Graze Veggie sushi plate snackVeggie Sushi Plate is a Japanese style snack. It’s not, however, sushi in the usual sense as there’s no rice involved. The main ingredients are ginger and nori peanuts, Japanese seaweed rice crackers and wasabi coated peas.

Key health benefits outlined by Graze for this snack are its fibre content plus the whole punnet has just 104 calories, meaning it's a 'Graze light' snack

Zico Coconut Water All Natural Healthy Drink

If you're looking to quench your thirst during or after a sporting activity, there's really no better drink than pure, natural water. But these days many of us want more from our drinks, which is why there's now a plethora of functional drinks offering all sorts of health benefits.

Some are fortified with extra vitamins and minerals which is good, but many also contain a lot of added sugar. This isn't good for health and it adds unnecessary calories which won't help with weight loss.

However, there is a more natural, health giving drink which has seen a boom in sales recently. Coconut water contains potassium, calcium and magnesium and is ideal to take along to a work out session.

Tesco Frozen Yogurt Mango & Passion Fruit Review

Tesco Frozen yogurt mango and passion fruit lidWhen it comes to grocery shopping I generally try sticking to a list. But I'm not immune to impulse buying and standing in an endless checkout queue leaves more time to stare at the shelves.

Dole Live Right Healthy Snacks Range Review

Last week a few selected bloggers including me, were invited to attend a healthy eating event at Richmond Towers Communications (RTC) in London. The event was part of a new product launch from Dole. 'Dole Food Company, Inc. is the world's largest producer and marketer of high-quality fresh fruit, fresh vegetables and fresh-cut flowers'.

Here in the UK, Dole is probably best known for their canned fruit and handy fruit pots which are ideal for snacking outside the home.

M&S Count on US Cooking Sauces Review

Marks and Spencer have brought out a new range of low fat Count on Us… cooking sauces. There are three varieties at the time of writing which are: Green Thai Curry Sauce (270 calories), Sweet & Sour Sauce (300 calories), and Jalfrezi (200 calories) - calories are per jar.

Knowing Marks & Spencer produce some of the finest tasting ready meals, I was interested to see whether their cooking sauce could produce similar results.
