Yoplait Calin+ Calcium + Vitamin D Yogurts Review

Yoplait Calin D yogurt potsThose of us who live in northern climes, such as the UK, are more likely to be running low on Vitamin D, especially during the winter months. Since we make around 90 percent of our Vitamin D from the sun's rays on our skin, we need to make up for the shortfall through the food we eat.

Vitamin D is needed essentially to help our body absorb and use Calcium, which is vital for healthy bones and teeth. Just eating plenty of calcium isn't enough.

If you’re not eating foods naturally rich in Vitamin D such as egg yolks, salmon, cod and tuna, you can include foods which are fortified with Vitamin D, such as milk.

But one easy way to get your entire recommended daily allowance for Vitamin D and 50 percent of Calcium is to eat a pot of Calin+. This is a new yogurt made in France for Yoplait.

I was kindly sent some pots of Calin+ to try out. There are three flavours to choose from: Vanilla, Cherry or Strawberry. Each variety comes in a four pack of 4 x 125g pots. I received the Vanilla and Cherry.

I started with the Vanilla since that’s my favourite. The ingredients include ’exhausted vanilla pods’. I’m not sure what that means but they weren't entirely exhausted since there were plenty of vanilla specks in the yogurt! It’s quite creamy and sweet with a delicate vanilla taste.

The Cherry yogurt includes chunky bits of cherry (10.3%) and is a lovely pink colour. It has the same creamy texture and, although cherry isn't a flavour I normally choose, this was pretty good.

Based on levels of nutrients found to be of benefit in studies, Yoplait recommend including one to two pots of Calin+ daily as part of a balanced diet. However, this yogurt isn't suitable for children under 10.

The only way to find out whether you are deficient in Vitamin D is to have a blood test. As it happens, both my husband and I recently had blood tests for different reasons. My result showed my Vitamin D levels were fine, whereas my husbands were too low and he was prescribed some super strength Vitamin D supplements.

Since he always forgets taking pills, having pots of Calin+ yogurt handy in the fridge was a real bonus. I’ll definitely keep on buying them for him. And, although I loved the taste, the calories are a bit too high for me. This is mainly due to the sugar content, nearly 4 teaspoons per pot!

Another thing, the UK doesn’t have any set recommended daily allowance for Vitamin D. However the EC does and this is currently 500 micrograms (ug) which is what each pot of Calin+ contains.
