Chicken Tikka Masala Tesco Light Choices

Chicken Tikka Masala is an easy enough meal to make from scratch. But sometimes it’s nice to have one ready in the freezer if you don’t have the time or ingredients to get cooking.

Recently tried by my family was this ready meal by Tesco’s Light Choices called Chicken Tikka Masala with Yellow Rice.

This is a reduced fat ready meal which has been given a ‘2 chilli’ rating, meaning ‘medium’ on the chilli heat scale. Each 400g pack has 415 calories and 11 ProPoints.

Tesco’s Light Choices Chicken Tikka Masala is described as:

Tender pieces of chicken breast in a medium spiced tomato sauce with coriander, served with yellow rice.

It’s easy to prepare. Simply stab a few holes in the clear cellophane top and oven cook for 40 minutes from frozen or in the microwave from frozen for around 10 minutes.
Still frozen
Watch out for the cellophane lids as they have a tendency to shrivel back on themselves during cooking. This inevitably causes any exposed parts of the meal to become dried out and hard. In my case, I cooked two meals with just one peeling back, leading to a few crunchy rice grains.

This meal provides a decent amount for one person. There is quite a lot of rice but the chicken is very spicy (to my tastebuds), so the rice is welcome. I always prepare extra vegetables so manage to eek out two servings with a 400g ready meal.

The older members of my family enjoyed this meal but it was a bit too spicy for my youngest.
After cooking
This is a fantastic meal if you’re counting calories, on a diet, or even just maintaining your weight. The spiciness really satisfies hunger cravings, it’s filling and pretty healthy all round. Only the salt narrowly misses out on a green traffic light.

Here’s what you can expect from Tesco's Light Choices range of foods:
