Sainsbury's Low Fat Creme Fraiche - 24 Calories

I recently wrote a review about Weight Watchers low fat crème fraiche which has fewer calories than nearly all other creme fraiche brands in the stores.

However, Sainsbury's Be Good To Yourself Crème Fraiche comes a close second with only 24 calories per tablespoon and 0.7g of fat.

The Food Doctor Spicy Seed & Nut Blend

Since discovering the tasty delights of Graze snacks, many of which contain exotic blends of nuts and seeds, I thought I’d try a an alternative range from The Food Doctor.

The pack is described as a: ‘wholesome spicy boost seed & nut blend’. One serving contains 137 calories.

Included in this mix are sunflower and pumpkin seeds, chopped cashew and Brazil nuts, dried red pepper, toasted sesame seeds, hulled hemp seeds and linseed. This lot is seasoned with a spicy combination of garlic, chilli and cayenne pepper, and wheat free soya sauce. Packs hold 100g where the recommended serving size is 25g or ¼ of the bag.

If you like meaty snacks, Mattessons have quite a few interesting, ready to eat treats that are ideal for packing into lunchboxes. If you’ve already tried Mattessons Twisted Tails, you might like Roasted Ham Bites.

Varieties of Batchelors Slim a Soup

Batchelors Slim a Soup are the lower calorie alternative to the Cup a Soup range. Soup, of course, is a great way of filling yourself up while you’re on a diet. Drinking a mugful of steaming soup can also help curb the urge to snack on other higher calorie snacks.

Currently, the range of Batchelors Slim a Soups include the following flavours:

SoBe V Water Low Cal 0% Sugar, Stevia Sweetened

Since I don't like the taste of plain water, I generally choose a no added sugar concentrate to add flavour to my cold drinks. However, if I’m out and about and need something thirst quenching, it's not always easy finding something that's sugar free.

I recently came across these flavoured waters called SoBe V Water. SoBe’s range of flavoured waters are also known as ‘functional drinks’. This generally means they’ve been enriched with various vitamins and minerals as well as certain herbal extracts to provide extra health benefits.

Normally I avoid these functional water drinks as they’re often loaded with sugar. However, I was happy to notice that this range of SoBe V Water drinks had 0% sugar and was naturally sweetened with Stevia extract.

Waitrose Milk Chocolate Drink - 38 Calories

Although I’m a lifelong fan of Options low calorie hot chocolate drinks, I still can’t resist the temptation to try out any rivals appearing on the supermarket shelves. Quite recently I discovered a Sainsbury’s own brand low calorie hot chocolate which was so good I’m now buying it on a regular basis.

Then last week I noticed this hot chocolate drink from Waitrose. I don’t know whether it's new, it doesn't say so on the label. But I’m sure I couldn't have failed to miss the ‘38 CALORIES’ in large, bright pink text on the front of the label. And this is what caught my eye. So into the basket it went.

9 Dairy Milk Substitutes

Of all the milk drunk in the UK, dairy milk is by far the most popular. Milk is an excellent source of protein, vitamins, minerals and calcium, all of which are essential for healthy bones and teeth.

But not everyone can drink dairy milk. For example, those who suffer from dairy intolerance, allergies or with special dietary requirements. Because milk is so versatile, many people choose to switch to a dairy milk substitute.

More Guilt Free Snacks from Marks & Spencer

Earlier this month in a previous post, I mentioned the NEW Marks and Spencer range of snacks called Guilt-Free Snacking.

These snacks aren't particularly low calorie foods. Instead, M&S have packed their treats into smaller portions. This way, if you're watching your weight or counting calories, you get to enjoy some of your favourite treats without having to worry about the calories ruining your diet.

There's a selection of savoury and sweet snacks. Some are new and some are mini portions of popular Marks & Spencer favourites. So far, all the snacks I've found have less than 150 calories each.

Here are a few more available in Marks and Spencer Foodhalls now.

Soreen 5 Lunchbox Loaves - Malt or Banana

Before discovering the dreaded calorie, I used to enjoy eating something called Soreen malt loaf.

These dark brown, sweet fruit loaves were packed in a yellow wrapper and had to be sliced. They were soft and squashy and tasted gorgeous when spread with butter.

It's been years since I've eaten malt loaf. But recently I had the pleasure of becoming re-acquainted with them when I found it in a more manageable form (calorie-wise).

Henna Natural Very Low Fat Set Yogurt

400g Henna Yogurt
While searching through the natural yogurts in ASDA, this yogurt caught my attention. First I had to check it was actually yogurt as the name ‘Henna’ seemed a bit out of place in the dairy section.

I’d never seen or heard of this brand before and was intrigued, even more so when I noticed the price tag of just £0.45 for the 400g pot! What a bargain.

Further along I found the same yogurt but in large,1 kilogram bucket like pots with an even more tempting price of £1.00.

Greek Stuffed Green Olives - Marks & Spencer

Olives are one of those snacks people seem to either love or hate. Even those that do like them often only like one colour – black or green.

My hubby is partial to the green ones and often arrives home with a new jar or tub of olives. (I don’t buy them).

Last week he brought home a 170g tub of stuffed olives from Marks and Spencer called ‘Plump Greek olives stuffed with slices of pimento pepper’. They actually looked quite appetising.

Mini Chocolate Indulgence Ice Creams, Sainsbury's

Every Summer guarantees an influx of new ice creams and lollies adorning the supermarket shelves. Normally I turn a blind eye to the pots of luxurious and decadent ice creams. But when I spot new arrivals in mini form, I’m irresistibly drawn to opening that cabinet door.

So it was when I came across these new Sainsbury’s Mini Chocolate Indulgence with Bourbon vanilla dairy ice cream. They’re miniature versions of Sainsbury’s Chocolate Indulgence ice cream sticks which of course means less calories. In fact, you’ll save over 100 calories by choosing the mini versions - great for those of us watching our weight.

Weight Watchers Macaroni Cheese

Macaroni cheese is an old childhood favourite often enjoyed well into adulthood. However, it’s not a meal that’s normally associated with dieting or losing weight. With cheese, butter, flour and pasta as principle ingredients, this is a meal slimmers should forgo.

Weight Watchers however, have a version which is low in fat and has just 88 calories per 100g.

Doves Farm Organic Wholewheat Digestive Biscuits

Biscuits, by the very nature of their ingredients, are generally not a healthy snack. But that’s not to say all biscuits are equal. Some are ‘healthier’ than others.

Many have reduced fat but extra sugar, while others have no sugar but are high in saturated fats or worse, hydrogenated fat. But biscuits such as these organic Wholewheat Digestives from Doves Farm, project a healthier image that can 'almost' make you feel virtuous when eating them.

How Traffic Lights Help with Healthy Food Choices

What do you think if you see a red traffic light? Stop, danger? Whatever first springs to mind, it’s probably not ‘Go’. And this is why the Traffic Light food labelling system, developed by the Food Standards Agency (FSA), can be such an effective tool in helping us make healthier food choices.

Although a number of major manufacturers and retailers have taken up this scheme, many others haven’t. Instead they use other criteria, which don’t apply to everyone and aren’t as easy to understand.

Cadbury's Milk Chocolate Gold Medals

Have you ever wondered why Olympic champions bite their medals while standing on the podium? Perhaps it’s because they’re checking whether or not they’re made from chocolate. Well, now the rest of us mere mortals can do the same thing.

Cadbury’s have produced these cute, lifelike gold medals made from their delicious milk chocolate. Each gold medal has 120 calories, so not too bad a choice calorie wise if you’re after a chocolate fix.

Marks & Spencer have brought out a range of specially designed tasty treats under a new label called ‘Guilt Free Snacking’. These treats include savoury snacks such as potato chips, and sweet treats like popcorn.

The calories per pack varies depending on which you choose, but they’re all around the 100 calorie mark.
