iShot Skinny Slim Potion Functional Drink Review

I often find that waiting at the pharmacy counter for a prescription is a good opportunity to spot products you wouldn’t normally find in a supermarket. And this is just what happened a couple of weeks ago where, on the counter right in front of me, were these tiny bottles of something called iShot Skinny Slim Potion.

A slim potion, can it be true? After a quick scan of the label and check of the calories (just 13) I bought one to test it out.

Graze Box Review - Honey & Lemon Oatbakes, Fig & Cherry Preserve

Graze Box Delivery Date: 15 June 2012

This week’s Graze box contained promotional leaflets as well as the usual tasty nibbles. The accompanying nutrition leaflet does it’s best to get customers into a summer mood, despite the British weather refusing to cooperate.

Included were postcards and vouchers for free Graze boxes and a cardboard 'construct-a-cactus' set. This gesture from Graze acknowledges the fact that the sun doesn't often shine here in the UK, so perhaps they're hoping that a dessert plant might brighten our spirits.

Onto this weeks delivery. Together with two previous favourites, I was lucky enough to receive another of Graze’s new dip snacks and a Graze nibble snack I've not yet tried.

Shapers Wholesome Range of Sandwiches, Wraps & Salads (New)

The Shapers range of calorie counted meals and snacks is expanding once again. Over in the chiller cabinets in Boots stores you can now find the ‘Shapers Wholesome’ range. This includes sandwiches, wraps and salads with fillings all inspired by British ingredients.

According to Boots, there are five types of sandwiches on both poppy seed and wholemeal bread and all the Wholesome range provide a good source of fibre. All have less than 350 calories, so whichever choice you make, there’s no need to worry about any hidden calories.

Percy Pig Yogurts from Marks & Spencer

Not to be confused with Peppa Pig, Percy Pig is Marks & Spencer’s edible character in the form of sweets. They've been enormously popular for years with people of all ages. Percy's popularity has led to a whole new selection of Percy Pig relatives as well as a vegetarian option.

And now there's another new addition to the Percy Pig collection, this time in the form of a yogurt. At 65 calories per pot, it’s also low enough in calories to be included in virtually any diet plan.

Neuro Bliss Mood Enhancement Drink Review

I spotted this drink in a branch of boots and was intrigued by its strange milky colour. Neuro Bliss is a lightly carbonated vitamin & herbal extract drink with the tagline ‘mood enhancement’. On the front of the 430ml bottle it has the tagline ‘Drink Smart – de-stress the healthy way'. On the back it promises ‘happiness in every bottle’.

This all sounds very promising. But I'm always a bit wary of so called ‘health’ giving beverages, especially when they're also full of sugar. This usually serves to add a load of empty calories which I can well do without.

Fortunately, Neuro Bliss is a low calorie drink with just 37 calories per bottle. And despite the rather high price tag, (approx. £1.89), that persuaded me to buy it. Plus who couldn't do with a bit of mood enhancing from time to time?

Range of Dole Fruit Pots and Calories

Eating a wide variety of fruit is fantastic for helping us stay healthy. It’s also perfect for slimmers who want to snack on something sweet without worrying about calories.

But if you’re a bit bored with apples and bananas, or you’re struggling to get children to eat more fruit, Dole fruit pots provide a convenient alternative to fresh fruit.

There are four varieties: 'fruit in juice', 'fruit in light syrup', 'fruit in fruit jelly' and 'fruit in vanilla flavoured custard'. Most are under 100 calories per pot.

Gullon Sugar Free Shortbread and Fiber Cookies

Living in a large city has some plus points, one of which is having access to European food stores. These places are usually frequented by expatriates missing their favourite foods from back home. But they also provide the natives with an interesting insight into what neighbouring countries around Europe are eating.

Passing by a Spanish delicatessen recently, I popped in to see what they had. Browsing around led me to the biscuit section where there were labels I could read (sadly I don’t speak Spanish). And standing out on the crowded shelves I couldn't fail to notice this SUGAR FREE pack of biscuits.

They’re usually placed right by the checkouts, which, when you’re stuck in a long queue, are impossible not to pick up.

Graze Box Review - Korai Chutney

Graze Box Delivery Date: 1 June 2012

After half a year of receiving Graze boxes on a weekly basis, I’ve decided to scale back my deliveries to once a fortnight. This means fewer reviews from me. But hopefully I’ve covered many of the available snacks and there are always additions to try out.

This week I received three of my favourite snacks and one of Graze’s new dips.

For various reasons, many of us choose to use alternative forms of sweetening ingredients. And, with the range of sugar substitutes expanding at a rapid rate, we now have more options available than ever. From zero calorie artificial sweeteners to natural alternatives, there should be something to suit most people's sweetening needs.

Castus Be Fruity Strawberry Fruit Bars

Always on the lookout for healthier and lower calorie snacks, I recently discovered these Strawberry, Be Fruity fruit bars by Castus.

I’d never seen or heard of them before, but the bright fresh looking packs caught my attention, as did the words on the front: '100% natural' and '1 bar = 1 portion of fruit'. After a quick check of the calories – 80 per bar, I picked up a box.

Marks & Spencer All Butter Viennese Biscuits

They’re high in fat and sugar and made to an ‘all butter’ recipe. Not the sort of thing normally recommended while trying to slim. But of course, all good diets allow a little bit of what you fancy, and these All Butter Viennese biscuits from Marks and Spencer are definitely fanciable.

Mini Redcurrant Puffs, by Sainsbury's - NEW

This is a new product from Sainsbury’s called Mini Redcurrant Puffs. These tiny biscuits (a bit larger than a £2 coin) are sort of a cross between a biscuit and a miniature pastry. They’re available in 150g packs with each biscuit worth 17 calories.

The outside has a delicious crispy flaky pastry topped with a crunchy sugar glaze. And in the middle is a dollop of redcurrant fruit flavoured filling which has the consistency of set gel.

The pack size is 150g which works out at an average of 763 calories for the entire contents. But with just 17 calories each, treating yourself to the odd two or three shouldn’t do much damage to the waistline.

Found in Sainsbury’s stores in the biscuits aisle.

Nutrition Information per biscuit: 17 calories, 0.2g protein, 2.1g carbohydrate, 1.2g sugars, 0.8g fat, 0.5g saturates, trace fibre, trace salt. Suitable for vegetarians. High fat, high saturates, high sugar, low salt.

Walkers Baked Stars Lower Fat Snacks

94 calories per pack
Scarcely a week goes by without a new snack appearing on the supermarket shelves. And here's another one from Walkers.

Baked Stars are oven baked rather than fried which helps bring the fat content down. According the the pack, they have 70% less fat than regular crisps. Some might argue that reducing the fat content decreases the taste. But not in this case. Walkers Baked Stars are sensational.

Described as:

'New Walkers baked stars are irresistibly tasty star-shaped snacks. Because they’re oven baked they’re 70% less fat and deliciously crunchy.'

Weight Watchers Chilli Beef & Potato Wedges

Mexican style chilli beef is the sort of meal you might expect to find loaded with fat and calories. Therefore, I was surprised to find Chilli Beef & Potato Wedges included in the Weight Watchers range of ready meals.

This weight Watchers meal is described as made with tender minced beef in a rich chilli sauce with smoked paprika and chunky golden potato wedges.

It’s low in fat, salt and sugar and has a mild spiciness rating. Each 400g pack has 386 calories and 10 ProPoints. Furthermore, eating the whole pack provides ‘2 of your 5 a day’.

Nakd. Wildly Different Infused Raisins

Until I started receiving Graze snacks, I’d never seen or even heard of raisins infused with other flavours. This is such a brilliant idea. I don’t know how they do it, but somehow, by infusing the flavour of another fruit, the humdrum raisin is turned into a far more interesting and tasty snack.

The idea must be catching on. I recently came across these four new varieties of raisins from Nakd. They’re called Wildly Different Cherry Infused Raisins, Lemon Infused Raisins, Orange Infused Raisins and Pineapple Infused Raisins.

They’re available in handy snack sized 25g packs and all of them have 75 calories a pack.

Weight Watchers No Added Sugar Cordials

While searching for my usual brand of sugar free cordial, I was surprised to see the Weight Watchers name peeping out amongst the domination of the Robinsons and supermarket own brand labels. It appears that Weight Watchers has added another line to its expanding product range with a variety of sugar free, low calorie, flavoured cordials.

The concentrated cordials are available in 1 litre bottles and flavours include: Sicilian Lemon & Elderflower, Italian Red Grape & Pomegranate and Chilean Plum & Raspberry.

REAL D'Lites Cassava Snacks

I’ve taken quite a liking to cassava snacks, so I was pleased to spot this brand in a branch of Boots recently. REAL D’lites are available in
two flavours: Vine Ripened Tomato and Herb Bites and Cheddar Cheese & Red Onion Bites. Each 20g pack contains 84 calories and 83 calories respectively.

These alternatives to crisps are made from the cassava plant rather than potatoes. The resulting snack is sort of a cross between a crisp, a rice cake and a prawn cracker. REAL D’lites have 70% less fat which is quite common now among fat reduced snacks.

Graze Box Review: My Thai Rice Crackers

Graze Box Delivery Date: 25 May 2012

As Friday is my preferred Graze box delivery date, I receive an email from Graze on the Thursday, inviting me to take a sneak preview into my Graze box.

In the early days I didn't do this as I enjoyed the surprise element. But now I usually take a peak to see if there's anything new. This week's email however, sent me into a mad panic.

The subject heading 'Your card has been declined' sent my mind spinning off in all sorts of directions. ‘Has my card been stolen? Am I a victim of identity theft? Or is my financial situation much worse than I feared?
