McCain Original Straight Cut Oven Chips

Who doesn’t like chips? They’re a huge favourite among British households. They’re also many a dieters downfall. According to Weightlossresources.co.uk, a serving of chip shop chips (400g) would net you 956 calories and 49.6g of fat. Bad news for dieters and their arteries.

However, if you don’t want to cut chips out of your diet altogether, you don’t need to. Besides the fact that potatoes are good for you, as this post discusses, McCain Original Straight Cut Oven Chips have just 5% fat, are lower in calories and therefore much better for your waistline. A 100g portion of these chips has only 158 calories and 3.8g of fat when oven baked.

Generally, it’s the thin cut French fries style chips which have the most calories. This is because the thinner they are, the more surface area there is to soak up the fat. For example, a portion of McDonald’s large French Fries has 430 calories and 23g of fat, or a small portion has 230 calories and 11g of fat. And a 100g portion of McCain Crispy French Fries has 270 calories when grilled – over 100 more calories than the Straight Cut Oven Chips.

If you love chips, but don’t like the fat and calorie count, it’s best to choose fatter chips which can be oven baked without any added fat or oil.

McCain Original Straight Cut Oven chips can be found in the freezer section of supermarkets and smaller outlets. Pack sizes include 454g, 907g and 1.81kg.

These days it’s really easy to make your own healthy, low fat chips. The Philips Hot Air fryer cooks chips with a tablespoon or less of oil. Last year it won the Good Housekeeping Institute Approved 2010 Award and this year it received the Which? ‘Best Small Home Appliance Brand’ Award 2011. And when using a handy chip making gadget such as the Kitchen Craft Potato Chipper, you can turn boring potatoes into a healthy, filling, cheap and enjoyable dish in next to no time.
