Holiday Destinations Likely to Cause Weight Gain

Going on holiday should be a time for having fun and enjoying ourselves. And for many of us, it's also a time to relax our eating and drinking habits after weeks or months of pre-holiday dieting.

Unfortunately, this spells disaster for waistlines with up to 60 percent of us gaining an average of 5lbs during the holiday. Furthermore, the country we holiday in can have an impact on how much weight we put on. Thanks to their large portion sizes, the US tops the poll of fat making holiday destinations. But some other countries aren't far behind.

Below are the top 10 holiday destinations cited as causing the most amount of weight gained.

Number of lbs gained on holiday

From a survey of 2,000 British Holidaymakers, the 5 main reasons given for weight increase and the percentage of people who gave these answers were as follows:

Larger portions
50%
Lounging around
50%
Alcohol
40%

Free refills
20%
Unable to resist seconds
17%

So, be warned. If you’re venturing off on holiday to any of the countries listed here, be prepared to put on weight. Or, if you’d rather not, take heed of the reasons cited by holidaymakers for causing them to gain weight. This way, you might be able to avoid becoming another holiday weight gain statistic and having to get back on the dieting treadmill on your return home.

These results were obtained by Obesimed, from a survey of 2,000 British holidaymakers.
