The Growing Success of Diet Coke

Coca Cola is possibly the most well known brand name on the planet. With around 1.6 billion servings being consumed on a daily basis, virtually every country in the world sells at least one version of Coke.

In these health conscious times, more of us are trying to reduce our sugar consumption and fizzy drinks such as Coke contribute a large amount of sugar to the daily diets of many people. For example, a regular 330ml can of Coke contains 35g of sugar, equating to just over eight teaspoons of sugar and 139 calories. Fortunately, for Cola addicts and those watching their waistbands, there is Diet Coke.

Diet Coke first made its appearance back in 1982 where, a year later it became the largest selling diet soft drink in the US, overtaking its predecessor and dieters favourite, Tab. And according to a news release in March, 2011, Diet Coke has overtaken rival Pepsi-Cola to become the second-most popular soft drink behind leader Coca-Cola.

Diet Coke is actually made to a different recipe than the original Coca Cola, rather than simply swapping sugar for sweeteners as might be imagined. There have also been new flavours introduced over the years including Diet Cherry Coke which is still popular. However, others such as Vanilla Diet Coke and Diet Coke with Lemon are now both discontinued.

Since the introduction of Diet Coke, the Coca Cola brand also produce Caffeine Free Diet Coke and Coke Zero. While regular Coca Cola and Diet Coke contain around 30mg of caffeine per 330ml, the caffeine-free version has removed this so is suitable for those trying to reduce their caffeine intake.

After its introduction, many people were left wondering what Coke Zero was all about. It's still sugar free, still Coke, but it has a different label. Apparently, Coca-Cola Zero uses the same sweeteners as Diet Coke but has a different flavour base. It is also designed to appeal more to men with its black labeling, as Diet Coke is sometimes seen as more for the females. According to their website, 'more females drink Diet Coke every day than any other soft drinks brand.'
