Outline of the Rosemary Conley Diet

Rosemary Conley became famous back in 1988 with the success of her enormously popular book ‘The Hip & Thigh Diet’. Rosemary Conley CBE, is the founder of the Rosemary Conley Diet and Fitness Clubs which, along with Weight Watchers and Slimming World, are counted as one of the big three diet clubs in the UK.

Rosemary Conley now offer several choices of diet plans including the Amazing Inch Loss Plan, the Gi Hip and Thigh Diet, the Lifestyle Change Plan and the Solo Slim Diet.

Dieters can choose to join a slimming class, of which there are over 2,000 around the country. Alternatively, they can subscribe to the Slim Online classes and receive access to online support from dieting coaches and other members. Also provided is an interactive food and fitness diary and access to countless recipes.

Rosemary Conley TV features a wealth of online videos showing exercises, recipes and much more. Also available to everyone is a bimonthly magazine which can be purchased in newsagents and newsstands or it can be subscribed to online.

How Does it Work?

Rosemary Conley’s diet is a low fat one based on the principle that, weight for weight, fat has twice as many calories as protein or carbohydrate. Therefore, if dieters substantially reduce their fat intake, they’re more likely to lose weight.

Dieters have three meals a day, plus a dessert and a daily milk allowance for drinks. All meals are pre-calorie calculated. So as long as dieters stick to the quantities given for recipes, there is no need for calorie counting. There is also a daily treat allowance of 150 calories which can be saved up for a special occasion once a week. The diet is flexible for those who like snacking, whereby meal quantities can be reduced to accommodate snacks.

Exercise features strongly in the Rosemary Conley diet plans. This is because exercise not only burns off calories faster, it helps increase lean muscle mass and overall metabolic rate.

What Can You Eat?

Dieters can eat regular foods and no special products need to be purchased. Most of the food eaten shouldn’t contain more than 5g of fat per 100g, apart from oily fish once a week. All food on the plans are healthy, eg. low fat, with lots of whole grains and high in fibre. ‘Unhealthy’ foods can be eaten as a treat and this is left up to the dieter's discretion. To keep hunger at bay, dieters can eat unlimited quantities of vegetables and at least five portions of fruit and vegetables are recommended each day. Meat and dairy is specially portioned controlled in the recipes so dieters are taught how to recognize portion size.

Is it Successful?

The Rosemary Conley diet will certainly help people lose weight, as long as they stick to it. It’s a healthy, well balanced diet which can be modified to suit the individual. Because there are several options for following the diet, such as online, joining a class or just buying a book, dieters can pick whichever suits them. There is also plenty of support provided to help keep motivation strong. It may be hard to follow long term as it can be difficult to stick to the ultra low fat regime indefinitely. But for reaching a target weight, it’s certainly one to try.
