Del Monte Naturally Light Super Fruits Drink Review

My husband recently came home with a carton of this – Del Monte Naturally Light Super Fruits drink. It’s got 50% less sugar than Del Monte’s standard Super Fruit drink. And the reason for this is… the man from Del Monte said YES – to Stevia.

Hooray. It’s great to see more companies using stevia in their products rather than adding sugar or artificial sweeteners. It’s also low in calories with just 20 calories per 100ml or 50 calories for a large 250ml glass.

Del Monte’s Naturally Light Super Fruits drink is made up from a mixture of high antioxidant fruits including red grapes, apple, pomegranate, cherries, aronia berries and blueberries. Each 250ml glass contains 100% of the recommended daily amount of vitamin C as well as providing a useful amount of B Vitamins, Vitamin E and Selenium.

The only sugars in this drink are those which are naturally occurring and this is still low with just 4.5g per 100ml or just over 1 teaspoon. There is no fat, saturated fat or salt to worry about either.

Here's some information from the carton:

"Great natural taste and sweetness, but with far fewer calories! Now you can enjoy delicious fruit juice drinks with 50% less calories and sugar. That’s because Del Monte Naturally Light is sweetened naturally from the leaves of a plant known as Stevia – which has been used for centuries in South America where it is known as “sweet leaf.

This drink was voted Product of the Year in the Consumer Survey of Product Innovation 2013.

So what does it taste like? To be honest, I wasn't expecting much. I don't buy juice drinks as they're really just a cheaper and much watered down version of fruit juice, AND far too sweet with all the extra sugar that's usually added. In this case, however ...

I found this juice very easy to drink. In fact, it reminds me of Ribena. It's light, refreshing and thirst quenching. It's hard to pick out any individual fruit taste, but all together it produces a really nice drink. This is an easy and very tasty way of adding some extra vitamins to your diet.

There is a lot of competition out there with sales of antioxidant drinks growing at a huge rate last year. But many of them are so full of sugar, they're not worth bothering with. If you're after a vitamin and antioxidant boost, this drink could be a useful way of giving your immune system a boost.

Other varieties include: Del Monte Light Mango & Papaya Juice Drink and Del Monte Light Pineapple & Lime Juice Drink which are also available in 1 litre cartons. You can find them in the ambient/long life section of supermarkets.
